. 1,000 RUNS There was a paper airplane flown in from the bleachers with a suggestion written on it in felt-tip marker:  1,000 RUNS!  Which you might take as meaning (a) 1,000 runs or (b) best offense in baseball.  1,000 runs is a very lofty goal; only one team since 1950 has done it, that being Lofty's 1999 Indians which had Alomar, Manny and Thome in the MOTO.  Still, that team won 97 games despite a dead-on mediocre pitching staff. That 1999 Indians team didn't even have Joey Belle; what it did have was the older Travis Fryman, and Harold Baines, and Einar Diaz, holding up their ends (... Read More

BOB DUTTON KNOWS 6 THINGS we might have liked to know when we started this thing a month ago.  One of which is, Felix seems willing to throw pitches suited to his new incarnation.  From that reporter, at least. Jean Segura plays shortstop good.  ... Apparently 30 days ago, the consensus was that Segura had been moved off short more because he was age 26, than out of any real desire to help the ballclub.  Nope.  Segura can pick it. HISASHI IWAKUMA The Mariners spent the day not wanting to be there.  Dr. D spent the night, not wanting to type.  Ryan Rowland-Smith waved off Iwakuma's walks (and velocity) as "a low-energy situation."  Mike Zunino chuckled it off as a mechanical thing, like balance, and that Iwakuma would get it squared away. While Mariners fans have been cautiously excited about the potential for Drew Smyly and worried but hopeful for Felix Hernandez to return to his 2015 form, there has been little eagerness for the potential of Yovani Gallardo to do anything other than be replaced.  The projection systems have offered little reason for a different opinion; suggesting the reduced innings, increased home run tendency, and newfound inability to leave runners on  base as new standards rather than random fluctuations. I started like everyone else; asking, "Is this all that Seth Smith was worth?"  And so I've... Read More

. Q.  Is this a smart move or a dumb move? A.  The Mainframe has come to think of the 2016-17 Seattle Mariners as a state-of-the-art organization, whether you are talking about inside baseball or out.  Where they disagree with the Mainframe, we assume there is good reason.  Though that doesn't mean we would hesitate to bet our own prognosis against theirs at times ;- ) These days, a prognosis like this is just a way to organize our thinking.  It IS a baseball chat, after all . A.  Nah.  In baseball they make commitments.  That's how F-500 works.  Politics are involved, and should be involved. . Amigos wondering whether Gamel's "Major League Equivalency" is cause for worry or celebration.  It's probably the latter.  As Matt points out, the default assumption is that if you took an established .286/.341/.390 major league veteran, then he could have been presumed to hit Ben Gamel's slash line in 2016.  Results vary, of course; it's just a stat, not the end of the discussion. If Gamel is as fast as they say -- and he did have 14 triples in 2015 -- then .286/.341/.390 would probably make him a factor in the American League.  That's even if he weren't 23 and developing (so that his .286... We'll remember again that James' fine study -- see the front page of Bill James Online for the article, which is probably behind the paywall -- has its limitations.  Every player is a +1 or a -1, regardless.  If James Paxton goes 25-3, 1.97 and Felix goes 15-10, 3.75, that's going to be plus one and minus one versus career norms.   Also, if Hisashi Iwakuma does a little skosh better in terms of K's, BB's, HR's, etc but only pitches 90 innings, that's a +1. But still.  It means SOMETHING when you say "the Cubs last year were +17 -8.  The Indians last year were +13.  The Royals in 2015 were +... Read More

Was it me, or were the first few days of 2017 NFL free agency one of the busiest there has ever been? DeSean Jackson going to Tampa Bay, Alshon Jeffrey being released from the Bears, Brandon Marshall going to the Giants. There was a lot of movement among the big names in the NFL.  The Seahawks though, big one of the more prominent clubs in the NFL, stayed quiet - and that is a good thing. Other than Steven Hauschka, there were not any key players that were up for free agency or even rumored to be released. And other than Hauschka, no one really moved nor were there any surprise moves made by... Read More

. Objectively speaking, Chris Heston was 12-11, 3.95 in the National League two years ago.  Objectively speaking, on Friday he was throwing a remarkable swerveball -- 89 MPH but an armside runnnn as though he gouged a huge piece out of the ball on the 3B side and then threw it with perfect backspin.  Objectively speaking, Chris Heston has always had a very high groundball rate despite a lack of much downward movement on his pitches. But what the Mainframe loved, loved, loved, was the "finish" on his pitches.  Heston is a Tim Hudson fanboy and he threw every pitch as if WILLING it to its... Read More

. Everybody sez, "Write what you know."  Unfortunately, the market for web content on bizarre rains of animals isn't lucrative.  So Dr. D writes what OTHER people know.  Moe sez, . Matt, has any study been done on spin rates and fly ball carry?  Golfers know, for example, that with a particular ball velocity, there is a spin rate that maximizes carry. Tour golfers go to great lengths to maximize length (with the driver) by matching spin and launch speed.  In general, the higher the launch speend the more you want to reduce spin to get greater distance.  Balls respond differently to... . Jerry Dipoto talks about pitch tunnels.  You will love this Baseball Prospectus .gif.  LOVE it, or your money back.   ... I think that by "tunnels" Dipoto is more referring to the idea of throwing a fast pitch and a slow pitch down the same tunnel, as Mark Melancon preaches.  But still. . If you didn't see it in the other article, there is a tsunami of "Groundballs Stink" momentum this spring.  Here's J.D. Martinez talking about it again.  Along the same lines, here again is Fangraphs' Travis Sawchik giving the OPS+ on fly balls as 139, and the OPS+ on grounders at 27.  Of course line... Read More

It couldn't be done they said, the second leg was merely a formality. No one had ever overcome a 4-0 deficit in the Champions League, and with the way Barcelona had been playing this season, it did not seem like they would be the ones to make the record books. They had fallen behind rivals Real Madrid in their domestic title race, and uncertainty had been surrounding the club as manager Luis Enrique made it official that he would not be returning after this season. Coming into the game Paris Saint-Germain had been gloating already, the entire city was already making predictions for the next... Read More

. WBC-SAN Was in a rocking chair from pitch one.  Granted, that rocking chair swayed very gently, to the tune of about 86 MPH.  But 'Kuma was in command of all four pitches, even throwing a handful of slow overhand change curves that were very effective, breaking shoulder to knee.  Jamie Moyer prime velocity is fine.  It's that extra step back from 86-88 that leaves you at 83 MPH and it's not do-able any more.  Kuma threw 86-88 leisurely, and early in the eyar. Lot of discussion lately about "command" vs "control" in the strike zone.  The command, sez they, is making the ball break WHEN you... Read More

. MAX POVSE First look for SSI Denizens.  Two innings, easy grok.  That being, if Max Povse were to execute these pitches exactly, he would easily win 15 games in the American League.  Plus or minus two games, of course.  We never want to get outlandish here. Povse threw a nice long (94'ish) fastball.  (I'll take Brooks and the eye test, at 94, versus MLB.com's 90.  Could be wrong.)  And he threw it from 6++ feet down to the kneecaps, but that wasn't the point.  His command ... let's give GameDay's location on the three AB's from the 5th inning.  We're not even going to tell you who the... Day five of the NFL Combine wrapped up today, and in theory teams should have a better idea of what positions are full of talent and which are lacking. Hypotheses are being confirmed and disproven everyday and it looks like one that many around the league had coming into the combine is one hypothesis that has so far been confirmed. Leading up to the combine not many disagreed with the supposition that there was a dearth of talent among the offensive tackle pool, and so far nothing has happened to disprove that. It is very well known throughout the Pacific Northwest that offensive line coach... Read More

. This winter was like survival rations on Sir Edmund's expedition to the Antarctic.  Boil and re-boil the coffee grounds until they're pure white, and then make hot water off those and call it light coffee.  Heh!  Well, Sunday the provisions boat arrived.  Let's stuff! . Hey, man.  Since Korners get 50 replies real quick and since Felix gets 4, you have only your ownselves to blame.  :- ) .... There is a scintillating comments area at my second site, Detect-O-Vision, on the question of whether Donald Trump's political successes are due to his being smart, or his being lucky, as it were.  Lampoon and Mr. Jonez especially have all sorts of thoughts that never occurred to me.  Personally I have tended to come down on the side of his being lucky.  By "lucky" I mean that he's clumsy, sloppy, but INADVERTENTLY cut from the perfect cloth to overachieve as One Man... University of Washington athletics is in the news this weekend for all the right reasons. John Ross III just broke Chris Johnson's 40-yeard dash record at the combine, Kelsey Plum just became the all-time leading scorer for women's basketball and Markelle Fultz made the short list of 15 for the Wooden Award in men's hoops. Ross was not the only Husky at the combine, as six others joined him Indianapolis. Safety Budda Baker, tight end Darrell Daniels, cornerbacks Sidney jones and Kevin King, outside linebacker JoJo Mathis and defensive tackle Elijah Qualls are all at the combine auditioning... . In Jeff Sullivan's Fangraphs chat on Friday, somebody lobbed in a question about the three most interesting March stories.  Incisively, Sullivan pointed out that Felix is one of his three because "he has something to prove" and, you can fill in your own details as to why that's more interesting than Tyler Motter having something to prove also.  That pitchers go through career transitions at the 2,000 IP mark, we knew.  That some of them fail, and that some of them do great, we also knew.  What we did not know, was specifically how he would attempt this.  Fortunately, Dr. D says modestly,... . FIRST HALF OF POST Craazzzzzy how many subplots we get to watch this year.  Neh? . SECOND HALF OF POST Fangraphs has a fresh KATOH article up bragging that the system called Edwin Diaz last year, and that it's calling Dan Vogelbach this year.  Chris Mitchell wrote it, and in a really fun format.  Dig in, amigo.   Mitchell allows the scouts equal time to demur on each Katoh Heroh.  In 'Bach's case, they simply laugh him off the field at first base.  That's all, next subject.  And though Denizens might assume this to be overstated, in Vogelbach's situation there was a -35 runs performance... . It's been at least three days since we promo'ed the Founding Father, and I'm getting jittery.  Hence . There was a quirky little piece the other day in the New York Times called "Baseball's Too Slow. Here's How to Fix It." Some absurd suggestions, but many authors (it was a joint piece) picked up on the commercial breaks, the pitching changes, batters stepping outside the box, the visits to the mound, etc. Victor Mather, one of the authors, had a great quote: "Vigilant and rigorous eradication of nonbaseball will give us the same dose of baseball in far less time." I really liked that line... Read More

Coaching Barcelona is not for the faint of heart. Over the past 10 years the entire ecosystem of the club; its players, executives, coaching staff and fans have all come to expect to compete for a treble if not win one every year. Of course, such expectations are impossible to meet year in and year out, and such expectations are bound to burn out whomever their manager is. Such is the case with the man who set their current standard, Pep Guardiola, and their current manager Luis Enrique has succumbed to the same fate. Like Guardiola, he lasted three seasons at the helm, and was nearly as... Read More

. G-Moneyball sez, . Mariners are playing the Replace Iwakuma Game for next season, and that's fine.  They'll have to replace Gallardo this season to because that guy looks like french toast.  Gotta have a lot of stop-gap arms if this season is playoffs or bust as it should be with the core sans Seager aging out. Gotta have enough material for a mid-season upgrade too, and the farm is trash especially once Moore and O'Neill get here. . In the Hey Bill section at BJOL, some 'net rat had browsed through the ten-year archives and come up with juicy.  Always worked for me.  It's a new book if you haven't read it, no? In 2008 John Dewan had pointed out that MLB hitters do much, MUCH better in the first three pitches of an at-bat than they do on pitches 4-20.  Kidding about the twenty.  Not kidding about the much.  Dewan gives .301/.317/.467 as the average hitter in a short at-bat compared to .223/.352/.348 in a long one.  Logically it would seem to be even more true ten years on, when the risk of a strikeout is ever-greater.  ...
