Value of the Hermann Model
Rick, who is the editor of a biology journal, tells us that his company is --- > spending a lot of time and money, to --- > teach its employees how to communicate with fellow employees who come from different "learning quadrants." Lots of companies do this now.
Here's a real good slide show on it, will give you a feel for it in a couple of minutes.
Let's say that you have one boss who is coming from an extreme area of the Top Left quadrant ... say, a saber blogger type :- ) ... and he is trying to talk to a "critical resource" ace salesman who comes from... Read More

For those who are squeamish about Nelson Cruz' WAR ... or Curtis Granderson's K's and defense ... or Shin-Soo Choo's lefthandedness ... Mike Napoli offers a different kind of squeem.
Napoli gives you, basically, what Curtis Granderson does in the batter's box -- .250 with 180 PX (power index). Except he does it from the right side.
True, he doesn't play in the middle of the field, but on the other hand he is much more solid at the plate. He averages 73 walks per 162 games, and the solidness goes far, far beyond simple BB rate. Here is the start of our 5-part series from last winter. ... Read More

POTD
Here is that four-part series on the lad. The Exec Sum is that Granderson:
Has chosen to become a hacker -- a .240 hitter with 35-40 homers (cf Carlos Quentin, Chris Davis, Edwin Encarnacion, now Josh Hamilton)
Is a legit 175-190 PX guy (very elite)
Plays mediocre-to-dubious CF ... which would be okay with Taijuan and K-Pax in there
Gives you a "hard" 3.0 to 4.0 WAR (has done it for 160 games, in batter's box, in postseason, etc)
Scores a lot of runs too

LH vs RH
Dr. D doesn't personally hold with the notion that the M's need to make huge FA decisions based on platoon splits.
Left-handedness or right-handedness, in a team's lineup, those tendencies morph very quickly. Supposing, just for argument's sake, that Mike Zunino is a pleasant surprise in 2014 and becomes your best hitter. Boom, your needs have changed and now you've just compromised on TWO (2) major free agents based on a need that isn't there any more.

Q. Should we "project" the 2014 M's rotation to be roughly comparable to the one in 2013?
A. Shannon Drayer, bless her heart, floated the thought that the M's rotation could be -100 runs better next year. If I'd been her I might have rephrased that thought (if I'd offered it) to say that the M's pitching could be -100 runs better.
The response, in the blog-o-sphere, was that:
Taijuan and K-Pax might do okay in 2014
If so, this is bound to be better than the 'dreadful' Back of Rotation (BOR) in 2013
BUT! Felix and WBC-san should be presumed to regress significantly

Start with the understanding that --- > Dr. D would not be particularly eager to have Robinson Cano on his baseball team.
There are a few things that just scrape me the wrong way about him.
For example, Dustin Pedroia is 90% of the player, that being the same player, and Pedroia is signed for life at $14M a season or something.
For instance, I could name you a hundred guys who hit .300/.360/.500 and who stopped playing well at exactly age 31. I'll name you one for free: Mike Sweeney, KC.

There's talk in the shouts about Cano, since it's the offseason so pipe dreams are a way to pass the time until dull reality strikes. Let's forget for a second that Cano has Jay-Z representing him, and I have trouble believing Cano would come to sleepy Seattle no matter the price or the supporting cast.
Let's say he would come if he got the contract in the neighborhood of what he wants (30 per for 7 seven years, opt out after 3 or some such), and we would have to make a choice: plunk down the change, or let it ride with the kids and some lesser lights added via trade or FA.

Brian Wilson
The Red Sox pretty much took away the whole "fear the beard" business, so what's the point?
Not really.
The real question is "is he back"?
All we know for sure is that he faced 49 batters in the regular season and then 24 more in the playoffs, and in that small amout of results, everything looked just like it did before.
Other than a slightly high BB% throughout, Wilson has shown everything you want in a late-inning guy. Lots of strikeouts, and he doesn't hurt himself: super-low HR/9; super-low ISO-against.

When you're suffering as a franchise you'd like to point to a success story. It's tedious to do anything too repetitively. Charles Barkley famously rebuked the NBA for scheduling back-to-back-to-back games: "I don't even like to have sex three nights in a row."
Not every post is "objective analysis," LrKrBoi29. That would be tedious.

Beltran wants "three-plus" years. Without making this a "study" as to the Return On Investment (ROI), let's first ask whether this idea is worthy of consideration in the first place. Obviously, Beltran could hit the wall in 2014; that's stating the obvious. Let's noodle around for a moment, asking whether he could play well... Read More

In the Dr. D household, we've had our own little mini-taunt battles.
Dr. D Junior, and Mrs. Dr. D, have been trying to sell him that the Seahawks receivers are really good, man. Dr. D does not even bother with pointing to the yardage totals; that would be too easy. Instead it's like "Man, Dad! Look at that CATCH by Tate!" to which he buys in for a moment ... yeah, man, that really was sweet. And he had another one like that earlier! "That's what I've been telling you!" All the way with Golden Tate. Two big catches already. I'm comin' around.
... two catches ... setting his career... Read More

This Week in Hey Bill:

If Bob Gibson were to come up today, would his team try to force him to "clean up" his delivery? Is there a chance that he might have been even better with a more conventional motion? Of course there's always a chance and my questions are very speculative. But I know that you've advocated more open-mindedness about unconventional mechanics, and I just wondered what your thoughts might be. Thanks.

DAD: Hey, John. Check this out. Here's a CBS list of 25 reasons football is better than baseball.
JOHN: :: shrugs :: ["what's next? A list of 25 reasons that three-on-three hoops is better than plunging the toilet? Okay, just gimme number 22.]
DAD: What would be your reason?
JOHN: What?! There's always something HAPPENING in football.
DAD: What do you mean. Felix striking out the side is nothing happening?
JOHN: :: rolls eyes :: They never score in baseball. Three outs, next inning. Three outs, next inning. When somebody does hit a home run, you didn't know it was going to... Read More

It's a funny thing about sports: You can pick it up, or put it down.
I got all wayyyyy into the Arsenal Gunners - Manchester United Red Devils matchup yesterday. I turned on the DVR, and they kicked the ball off, and it was all downhill from there. My remedy was simple. I fast-forwarded, confirmed the loss, and then [until right this moment] vaporized soccer from my existence.
It's one of my most valuable life tricks, seriously. I just switch my realities when it comes to entertainment. One isn't working, just "cancel" it like La Femme Nikita sneaking up behind a baddie from Red... Read More

Is he on this list or the OF list? Or trade bait? We don't know, but we know this: the direction he's going is a plate-skills-only guy with minimal ISO. That's fine if he brings defensive value at 2b or CF, and there's room for him one place or the other. Former seems true. Latter might not be.

It says here the "QO" was a no-brainer. Producing a ton of XBH with a below-average K% is a key point for me, and only Morales and Seager did it. Also, you can't replace someone with no one.

By the way, thanks to all who took the time to respond to the survey. It was very instructive.

The guard is a ground grappling position where one combatant has their back to the ground, while attempting to control the other combatant using the legs. In pure grappling combat sports, the guard is considered an advantageous position, because the bottom combatant can attack with various joint locks and chokeholds, while the top combatant's priority is to transition into a more dominant position, a process known as passing the guard.
The guard is a key part of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where it is used as an offensive position. - Wikipedia

I have developed a plan for the Spectometer blog, and I am seeking your input to see if the plan will work. So ... please review the plan and follow the link below to respond to the survey. Thank you very much for your consideration!
Off-season plan:
1. Continuation of the rickroll Depth Charts. Part 1 (starters) here. Part 2 (relievers) here.
2. Some Spectometer Time Machine reports. If we had been publishing at the time, what would Spectometer have said about Justin Smoak, Jose Lopez, Matt Tuiasosopo or, say, Edgar Martinez?
3. Leader boards for the various Spectometer stats... Read More
