NYC Makes Moves to Turn Food into Energy

The food waste-to-energy program in New York is still pretty meager right now. Only about 2 tons per day make their way into the energy grid. Now, however, it looks like the city is stepping up its game. A new program starting up this fall will up that amount to about 50 tons.

If you’re not familiar with the process, basically sewage plants use microorganisms in controlled environments to digest away organic waste. Then the methane and other materials are used as energy or fertilizers. It’s not perfect, but it’s still a step up from just letting all the waste go to… waste. Maybe we can look forward to a future where all of our organic waste gets converted for reuse?
