Lawsuit Against NYC Brings Money But Little Justice

A lawsuit against the city of New York was settled recently to the tune of $40 million. This money was spread out between five victims of shoddy police work and racism. And while the people in question, all of whom served between 5 and 13 years in prison for a crime they did not commit, were certainly right in their fight, one has to question whether there was any real justice done.

The real criminals here are the police officers and other criminal justice employees. But since NYC is willing to shell out taxpayer money to buy off the victims of this injustice, those responsible for it will likely walk away without a care in the world. It’s a common tactic, handing people money so they’ll stop fighting. Unfortunately, the end result is little more than an encouragement of corruption in the legal system. After all, if you’re not going to end up in jail simply because you’re a police officer, what reason do you have to not abuse your power?
