Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for September 2
So far, we know of only one September call-up, and that is James Paxton (Talk40 #3), whom, as we speculated, appears likely to get some starts after Taijuan Walker (Talk40 #2) gets his three outings in the books.
But it seems likely there will be more.
All the regular seasons are over. I think I said yesterday that Everett and Pulaski were the only teams in the playoffs, but that is not correct. Clinton is too.
AAA -- Sacramento 9, Tacoma 6 -- Box
Ten different players got the call from Tacoma to Seattle during the course of the year, and only Logan Bawcom (Talk40 #31) and Nate Tenbrink (26intheMix) were on the roster for the entire season. Interesting.
The season ended with Andrew Carraway (Watch List) giving up eight runs (five earned) in 4.2 IP. I can't say his professional baseball future looks too bright.
Veteran Joseph Dunigan homered, and James Jones (Watch List) made the most of his brief stay at AAA with two doubles, a single and a walk.
AA -- Huntsville 4, Jackson 3 -- Box
You can see from the box score that Huntsville was doing some manner of strange shifting in its outfield.
Beside that, Denny Almonte homered, and Carson Smith (Talk40 #13) pitched another scoreless 9th.
Smith finished the season with a 16.2-inning scoreless streak.
Dominic Leone (Talk40 #25) didn't allow an earned run, but his wild pitch allowed the difference-maker to cross the plate.
Both Smith and Leone, as we've noted, are heading to the Arizona Fall League.
High-A -- High Desert 9, Lake Elsinore 8 -- Box
The Mavericks, at least, ended their year on a winning note, thanks to some big offensive performances.
- Guillermo Pimentel (26intheMix): home run, two singles
- Jordy Lara: home run, double
- Dillon Hazlett: double, two singles
- Ketel Marte (26intheMix): triple, two singles
All told the Mavs ended up with 17 hits.
Low-A -- Cedar Rapids 15, Clinton 6 -- Box
Good thing the LumberKings did make the playoffs so they don't have the spend the offseason with this thumping as their last game.
Steven Ewing got the start and gave up 9 ER in 4.2 IP. Yesterday, I had listed Victor Sanchez (Talk40 #12) as the starter, but obviously he was held back for the postseason.
There were some offensive highlights, including a home run from Gabriel Guerrero (Talk40 #16) (a three-run shot), who also had a triple. Zach Shank also homered.
Short Season-A -- Everett 9, Spokane 3 -- Box
The Aqua Sox, meanwhile, get to cruise into the playoffs on the heels of a 44-32 regular season and an easy final-game win.
Phillips Castillo (Talk40 #38) had a two-run homer plus a single.
Justin Seager had a double and two walks.
Looking Ahead
Everett opens its playoff series against Vancouver. The starter has not been named at this time.
