BEA live streams!

Conferences are a great way to meet new people, sneak in some travel, and expose yourself to all that is new and exciting in a particular field. I've found that the best take-aways for me from any conference are the connections I make with the other people there. I'm best at meeting people between sessions, expanding on what the sessions talked about, grabbing lunch or a drink to dig deeper, and following up after the conference.

Censorship report: Hong Kong's banned book trade

In America, we sometimes take our freedoms for granted. Here, a "banned book" is one that might get kicked out of a school or a library, even though it continues to be widely available at other libraries and book stores for anyone to buy. But for people living in China, a "banned book" is just that: it is banned, period.

Storybird lets anyone be a multi-media short story publisher

When I think about the word publisher, I still think about some huge building in New York City where there are hundreds of people with pencils between their teeth and frantic looks on their faces running around some skyscraper making the magic happen. Maybe that's an image I stole from a newsroom, but whatever. My point is, I think of someone else, typically a whole team of someone else's, bringing a book to life.

Will Woodson become a Bronco?

While starting at the University of Michigan, Charles Woodson became one of the first and only primarily defensive players to win the Heisman Trophy. This, of course, was a huge feat. To get that Heisman Trophy award, he beat out second-placer Peyton Manning by 282 votes. Now, after a successful run with the Green Bay Packers, Charles Woodson finds himself as a coveted free agent looking for a suitor. Will Woodson end up playing on the same team as the player he beat out so many years ago to become the Heisman Trophy winner?

We seldom read other sites before writing our own postgame, but tonight we wandered over and lazily checked one of them.  Big Mistake.  That's what the Govuhnatuh would say.

Going from the sheer sports pleasure of watching the game on TV, to the recap, induced some major vertigo ... hey, we warned yer, Doc!  Keep yer eyes on yer own paper already.

Too late:

Rauuuuuuul, Dept.

After "HR - Ibanez 2 (6)" in the Bronx on Wednesday, he went on ESPN's Quick Pitch and praised his teammates highly.  "We've got a bunch of gamers and fighters, and we're enjoying playing together," he sez.

Granted, Rauuul has always been an org guy, a leader in this respect.  But his statement is also accurate.  The Mariners do have gamers now.  Kyle Seager is a "gamer."  Obviously Rauuul is.  You can name your own list, and it isn't a short one.

The average fan, like you and me, probably has no way to comprehend what it's like going from AAA to ... well, to being on ESPN, to walking out into triple-deck stadiums, to playing in front of 12 slo-mo TV's, to going up against all of the computers and scouting reports that tear a player's strike zone limb-from-limb.

It's got to be another thing entirely, to go into the city of New York and play in Yankee Stadium.

Dr. D Mailin' It In Tonight, But the Mariners Ain't

Just so you have sumpin' to go with your coffee...

That colloquialism reminds me of Leo Durocher's autobiography.  (We got a birdwalk in here real quick.)  He loved Willie Mays.  They'd go on a road trip, on a ... what's the word ... oh yeah, a bus.  Willie would pull out one of those old-style coin purses and pass it around the bus, saying "Gonna be a long trip, boys!  Put a little sumpin' in for the Kid!"

He'd get it back, there'd be six cents, four ounces of tobacco juice and a horrible mess.  "Every little bit helps!," he'd beam.

Everybody likes an irrepressible spirit :- ) think of this postgame thread as a coin purse...

.........

If the Mariners were the best team in baseball, there'd have been no shame in losing that one.  CC vs Felix, titanic struggle, Yank$ came out on top on this one.

They used to have Pedro Martinez' number, the Yankees did.  That is because they did not buy in to the mystique.  They'd keep it close, and run his pitch count up, and wait their turn, just like the Yankees did today...

Do sheriffs have a sense of humor?

It wasn't too long ago that Peyton Manning was getting used to a new home. After recovering from a neck injury and being cut form his previous home in Indianapolis, Manning found himself packing his bags and heading west, like the gold miners of old. While it didn't take long for him to be accepted in Bronco country with open arms, it did take some time and an unfortunate playoff loss, to get used to his new surroundings. Now, in lieu of being at the top of Vegas odd makers predictions, it looks as if Manning is getting a little more comfortable in his new home.
