9 Classic Cheeseball Sci-Fi and Fantasy Flicks

There are some movies out there that you see and you know they are bad, but for some reason your heart opens up a special place for them.  Sometimes we see them as children, viewing them with eyes that are still filled with wonder and not yet critical of the many horrible things you can do to a movie, thus they stick to us.  Others just happen to be the proper mixture of bad and good, inspiring within us a compelling need to watch them, regardless of the fact that we know we should look away.  But they always manage to follow us to the ends of our lives, those special and especially bad films that we will sit down and watch at a moment’s notice.

I decided to make a list of nine of my favorite bad films from the science fiction and fantasy genres.  Some of these you may have seen, others may be unknown to you.  Actually, if you grew up in the 80s they’re probably all known to you.  While some of them have gotten good reviews, any sane person that sits back and watches them with an unbiased eye will see exactly how bad they are when held up to modern standards of what makes a film good. And even though most of these on my list seem to come from the 80s (a golden age for cheesy sci-fi and fantasy movies, it seems), the true talent for cheese in film extends far beyond the boundaries of a single decade.  Read on and enjoy.

El Cartelua

.

SSI is way into family-friendly tone.  You know that when you're on SSI you're Safe For Work.  :- )  And we don't want to cause a proliferation of debatable language.  But ...

... there is no good synonym for "badass."

The Venezuelan slang for that is "Cartelua," stitched onto Felix' glove, of course.  Felix is, in fact, a cartelua, and that with a capital C.

Movie review: 'The Wolf of Wall Street'

At long last, I finally found the time to hit the theater to see Martin Scorsese's latest film, The Wolf of Wall Street. It did not disappoint. Wolf is, in many ways, classic Scorsese: Stylish, unique, quirky, beautifully shot and masterfully acted. And for those of you wondering, yes, Wolf is completely over the top. It's completely bananas. And if you are a Scorsese fan, you're likely going to enjoy this ride immensely.

New Jack City

.

Was bangin' out a little office work the other day.  Needed some 'Net Muzak, as it were.  We checked the 710 Hot Stove pool filter and saw a Dec. 13 Zduriencik radio show trapped in there.  Which you won't want to miss.

710 homeys asked whether Zduriencik got the tinglies meeting Jay-Z.  Quite the oppo:  Jay-Z and entourage were starry-eyed at being in an MLB locker room.  (?!)

Zduriencik, obviously bemused, describes how the entire conference was in a holding pattern, waiting for Jay-Z to finish a concert in LA and fly up.  Zduriencik gives some detail as to the bright-lights welcome that the Mariners had planned for the Cano entourage... just for instance, a Jay-Z birthday cake, a set of Mariner jerseys for all the hangers-on, a "Welcome to Safeco Jay-Z!" scoreboard and so forth.

You and I wouldn't think that would be much of a biggie, considering the LA music moguls that these people hang with.  I guess there's a little sports hero wannabe, even in the President of the U.S. ...

Cano at the WBC

"Suspect what it is?  How can it not know what it IS?!" - Harrison Ford, Blade Runner, after interviewing a Replicant

...

Once the ESPN New York Network began to fear that Cano might actually leave ... one of the talking heads said something that stopped me short.  It suddenly seemed possible.

Verducci, was it?  In a resigned, somber tone, he admitted that when he watched Robinson Cano at the WBC --- > "I saw a completely different player there."

Cano didn't say much about it, but he (evidently) disliked being in Derek Jeter's shadow, disliked being an afterthought with the Yankees.  I mean, you remember how Shaq and Kobe never got along in LA; truly great athletes come with self-images to match.  You don't get to be as good as Michael Jordan, and not know how good you are.

When a player is [by far the best player in a locker room], he is seldom comfortable with being viewed as anything other than [the best player in the locker room].

Have you seen the Yankee WAR leaders from 2013?!  Cano has like 6+ and then everybody else has 1+.  I think Gardner slid in with 2-something, but, Brett Gardner.
