Make that three 1000-yard receivers

Denver picks up Wes Welker in free agency.

This past week, pro bowl receiver Wes Welker decided to test the market in free agency. Though he had been with the Patriots since 2007, and also saw his former quarterback take a pay cut to ensure enough money to man a great team, Welker felt the need to explore. After losing his franchise tag from New England (who decided to not use it at all this season), Welker wanted to look for greener pastures. Those greener pastures have seemed to appear in the form of Rocky Mountains.

According to sources, Wes Welker and the Denver Broncos have agreed to terms on a two-year, $12 million contract, including a clause for extra money for every season with over 90 catches. Vice president of football operations John Elway tweeted, “Excited to have Wes join the Broncos. His production & toughness will be a great asset!”

He also told reporters that, “Anytime you can take a player from a team you have to compete against, it helps, especially the caliber of Wes Welker.” While this was a hit for the Patriots, they did bounce back quickly, signing receiver Danny Amendola previously of the Saint Louis Rams.

The addition, Welker brings in another receiver to a corps that already has two 1000-yard receivers. This past season, Payton Manning made a splash targeting Demaryius Thomas and Eric Deceker to the tone of over 2000 combined yards. The addition of Welker will give the Sheriff another strong target, further opening up the airborne assault.

Though there are other holes the Denver Broncos need to fill, the addition of Wes Welker is big win for the franchise. With the Las Vegas odds makers already hoisting Denver to the top of the pre-season Super Bowl favorites, an addition like this can only add to the previously large stock. Will the Broncos have what it takes to hoist the Lombardi trophy in 2014?
