Can you use an Amiibo to get free subway rides?
The popular Amiibo figurines for Super Smash Bros, which can be programmed and leveled up just like one of the video game characters, may have other benefits as well. A recent Instagram video reportedly shows someone using a Samus Amiibo to unlock a door on the Moscow subway station.
It turns out that the video is real, but Samus won't grant you a free ride. On the Moscow subway, those doors will open for anyone holding a Moscow subway card. It doesn't charge the card, it just uses it to unlock the door.
The Amiibo figurines use RFID technology to identify themselves to your gaming system. This RFID is apparently close enough to a Moscow subway card that it will unlock the doors for you. But don't try using Samus to pay for your ride, or on any other subway system! Sadly, you still have to buy your own ticket.
