Lunar Lakes: First Impressions

This new world is on sale through June 20th

Having grown a little tired of Starlight Shores, I decided to move my Sims to Lunar Lakes. I resisted buying the new world for a long time - after all, it costs almost half the price of an expansion pack, but with no added gameplay. But eventually my curiosity got the better of me.

Incidentally, if you want to buy Lunar Lakes, don't get tricked into buying $40 worth of Sims Store credits. Credits come in $10, $20, and $40 denominations, but Lunar Lakes costs $24.50 (on sale for only $18.50 now through June 20th [it literally went on sale the day after I bought it {grr}]). Just make two purchases: one for a $10 credit, and one for a $20 credit.

Stability is a big issue with Lunar Lakes. Everyone I have talked to who has it, has complained that it crashes a lot. My copy crashed twice in about 10 hours of game play, and I have a pretty decent computer. I strongly recommend that you save often while playing. It particularly seems to crash a lot for people who have the Pets expansion pack installed. Consider yourself warned!

A lot of people also were peeved to find that you can't, as the marketing material says, "explore the Crystal Mine and discover rare rocks and gems." The Crystal Mine exists as a regular community park lot, but there's nothing to really explore. Just outside the Crystal Mine are a lot of gem spawners, but when I visited, I collected nothing unusually rare. But we should all know by now that the marketing department often writes checks that the developers can't cash!

But enough of the boring old negative stuff. The positive stuff is: this world is both gorgeous and unique. I spent a lot of time just browsing around the map in Town View, and looking for neat new places to explore with my Sims. I love the "alien world" aesthetic a lot more than I thought I would. Just look at the cool, bizarre graveyard, pictured above!

This world has generally light-colored terrain, and a moon which hangs large and low. This not only looks cool, but it gives a lot more ambient light at night than many of the other worlds. Darkness in the game is one of my pet peeves. If you have noticed how well-lit Egypt is in comparison to the other worlds, Lunar Lakes has a similar effect.
