NYC Working to Ban Job-Related Credit Checks

There’s a phenomenon going on the US that is not only an invasion of privacy but discriminates against people based solely on their economic status - credit checks for employment. Despite whether or not you’re qualified for the job, a mandatory credit check can mean that a potential boss will dump you in favor of someone that’s learned to play the credit score game better than you. So far there are just ten states in the US that have similar anti-check laws and hopefully New York will become the next on that list. When companies opposed to the new law were asked about it, they spouted some jargon-filled non-answers about how they should be able to keep using credit checks because “it’s good for the consumer”. Naturally, they refused to elaborate on what exactly that meant. No more credit checks for jobs - a victory for those just trying to make a living and survive.
