There’s a place down in Queens called 5 Pointz - you may have heard of it. It’s a focal point for graffiti artists and has been so for decades. Now, the great developers of the city have finally seen fit to destroy this creative holy place. Last week the demolition began and a piece of New York’s history has been destroyed forever.
So what will take the place of this artists’ playground? Why, more ugly high-rises, of course. It’s sad to see something like this gone from the world, but good luck fighting to preserve history when there’s a huge pile of cash on the line. And never mind the fact that those poverty-stricken folks that used graffiti as an outlet may move on to more serious crimes. New York’s policy as of late seems to disregard the obvious in favor of an unrealistic view of the city, one where everyone lives in shining glass buildings and pays their taxes on time. And 5 Pointz is just one more casualty in this war against reality.
