The Alligators of the NYC Sewers!

It’s an old tale that many have heard - that alligators secretly prowl the sewers of New York. The original tale comes from 1963, when one author told of people buying alligators as pets and then, after not wanting them anymore, flushing them down toilets and into the bowels of the city. From there, these creatures grew into giant, vicious, albino beasts that prey upon city workers and other unfortunate individuals.

Of course, if the mythology is to be believed, the tales actually begin around a century ago and that alligator sightings have been rare but not non-existent over the years. There’s even a supposed news article dating back to 1831 that reports on an alligator sighting. So have these creatures been around all along? Are they lurking beneath the streets, waiting to spring out and turn us into alligator chow?

Probably not, but it’s always fun to speculate.
