Dating in New York City

Where to go, and what to do when you get there

How can such a big city feel so limited? There are millions of people in New York City, but it can be hard to find that someone special. A recent survey of Big Apple residents had some interesting insights: most New Yorkers wait at least a few dates before hooking up, and less than half would hook up after a great first date. A whopping 26% wait a few weeks before hitting the sack, which seems surprising. Maybe I have been doing it wrong all along. (Or right!)

Of course, if you want to have a great first date, you have to lay the groundwork. What's the best place to go on a date in New York City? Some top suggestions include:

Pacific Standard (Park Slope)
This cute, cozy little microbrew pub features comfy couches, a big screen TV, and board games for patrons to play. What a great way to defuse the tension of a first date - have a rousing round of Jenga! Just be sure to pick your games carefully. There's nothing worse than playing Scrabble with someone who hates Scrabble and is terrible at it. And remember, the only thing worse than a sore loser is a bad winner.

Maison Premiere (Williamsburg)
This beautiful little French bistro is sexy as all get-out, with a wonderful atmosphere and a menu that includes delicious oysters (wink wink!) and a full cocktail menu including absinthe. Oyster Happy Hour is Friday 4-7PM, Saturday/Sunday 11AM-1PM but be prepared - this place is hot, and there can be a long wait at Happy Hour.

Fat Cat (West Village)
Described by some as "shabby chic," this West Village bar offers a relaxed crowd, live jazz, plus a collection of games like air hockey and backgammon. It can get pretty crowded, especially on Friday or Saturday night, but this is a great place to loosen up and have a fun time with someone.
