NBA MVP candidates: Take III

Reigning scoring champion of the NBA, Kevin Durant.

While I've given a shout outs to some of the older players in the league, it is time to recognize some of the young guns who can take a stab at the NBA MVP. It makes it even easier to give a nod to the youth when their name is Kevin Durant, and they are the reigning scoring champion of the NBA. Durant is the heart and soul of the Oklahoma City Thunder, and is making a splash trying to help his team get back to the championship this season.

What makes the 25-year-old Durant so special is that he makes dropping 30 points on opponents look easy. This season alone, Durant has been averaging 28.1 points per game, and has even had a game scoring above 50 points (as well multiple 40+ point efforts). In addition to his scoring, Durant is averaging 7.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.3 blocks. While he is known for his scoring, Durant has become an all-around player this season, putting the work to be a defensive force. After a rough loss to the Miami Heat in the finals, Durant has re-worked his game, and become one of the best all around players in the league.

Before becoming OKC’s star, Durant played for the Texas Longhorns. He was drafted No. 2 overall in the 2007 draft, and went on to become the Rookie of the Year, as well as winning three NBA Scoring Championships. He was also a member of the 2012 USA Olympic Gold Medal winning team.

Though he is surrounded by other talent on the team (Westbrook and Ibaka are no slouches), it is obvious the Thunder aren't the Thunder without Durant’s impressive skills and subtle, yet efficient, leadership. Keep your eyes out for the Thunder to make a deep run in the playoffs, as well as at least one voter dropping Durant’s name on the MVP ballot.
