Sorry, NYC - No Ferrets for You

A battle for ferret rights has been going on in New York and recently it came to a close. The ending was not, however, as ferret lovers might have hoped. The city stands by its decision to not allow these cuddly creatures as pets.

The arguments against the animals ultimately came down to their levels of aggressiveness. There has been worry that they might become an invasive population if they were to get loose and start breeding, although studies have shown that this is highly unlikely. And the proposed lifting of the city’s ban on ferrets included provisions that required ferret owners to get their pets fixed, so there was even an added level of security in place.

Most cities allow ferrets as pet, so NYC is in the minority. And many of those supporting the allowance of ferrets say that the board did not do their research. But ferret owners need not despair forever, as it’s quite likely the ban will be challenged again at the first opportunity.
