Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for June 22 (remaining parts)
On the news front, Franklin Gutierrez finally got recalled to the majors. Since he was coming off the 60-day DL, he needed to be placed back on the 40-man roster. It was Eric Thames that moved to the top of the discard pile this time. Thames will probably get claimed and traded somewhere for "cash considerations" or the like. He's a valuable spare part, but it seemed that Eric Wedge never cared for him.
As for Guti, we think that "Franklin Gutierrez" and "Everyday Player" are Never. Ever. Ever. Getting Back Together. [Why, yes, I do have an 11-year-old daughter. Why do you ask?] But if he can be kept healthy he ought to be a valuable role player. That's a big "if," of course.
AA -- Jackson 10, Mobile 5 -- Box
It is definitely time to bust out ... The Morbanwagon!
Julio Morban (Talk40 #15): 3-for-5, two doubles, HR. On the year: .330/.382/.528. It was the fifth time that Julio left the schoolyard this season. The K% is still high, but it has the potential to come down (he's still just 21 and at AA).
And I can't ignore James Jones (Watch List), who actually had two home runs (and a single). He has five on the season now as well.
High-A -- High Desert 13, Bakersfield 8 -- Box
Kevin Rivers homered after subbing in for Jabari Blash (Watch List) early in the game. Not sure what happened to Blash
Steven Baron had a double, a triple and a single.
Low-A -- Burlington 5, Clinton 4 [10 innings] -- Box
Two more hits and a walk for Jabari Henry (26intheMix). Now hitting .323/.426/.503.
Dario Pizzano (26intheMix) contributed a double and a single.
Janelfry Zorrilla was the key to the game-winning rally. He singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Grady Wood (26intheMix) got the save.
Short Season-A -- Everett 3, Hillsboro 1 -- Box
Short Season-A -- Hillsboro 7, Everett 1 -- Box
Game1 : Shades of last year's Zuninonian start? D.J. Peterson goes yard in epic fashion: a 3-run shot to break a scoreless tie in the 6th (of a 7-inning game).
It was another good start for Thyago Viera: 6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.
Game 2: It was Justin Seager's turn: the "bigger little bro'" went 3-for-3. It was a losing effort, but not due to starter Tyler Olson of Gonzaga: 5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.
Looking Ahead
Erasmo Ramirez is set to start for the Tacoma rotation that now includes Walker, Hultzen, Paxton and Maurer as well. That's a pretty good five right there.
Tyler Pike (Talk40 #14) is slated for Clinton.
