Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for August 24

Banner day for Teen Titan Yates ... Wilson progressing ... Zunino nears rehab assignment ... etc.

News: Ryan Divish reports that D.J. Peterson will miss at least six weeks after his jaw surgery, and it may be two-step surgery.   Divish quotes Jack Zduriencik as saying: “He was scheduled to play in the Arizona Fall League so we’ll have to re-evaluate that.”

Divish also reports that Mike Zunino (Talk40 #1) is likely to report to Tacoma for a rehab assignment by mid-week.

He's been catching bullpen sessions and taking batting practice.

AAA -- Tucson 6, Tacoma 4  -- Box

The Padres got five in the 7th off of Hector Noesi and Brian Moran (Talk40 #35) to take command.

Nate Tenbrink (26intheMix) got his 14th homer of the year, and Franklin Gutierrez had a pair of doubles.

Abraham Almonte (26intheMix) was hitless, but had a walk and a stolen base.

Meanwhile, our man Ji-Man Choi (Talk40 #19) is struggling with AAA.  Only one hit in his first 24 PAs.

AA -- Chattanooga 7, Jackson 4  -- Box

The weird and wonderful world of Jabari Blash (Watch List).  No Blash Splash, but 0-for-0 with four walks.

Chris Taylor (Talk40 #28) had two more hits and a stolen base.  He leads the organization in hits with 156.  With 35 steals, he trails only Jamal Austin (37).   His 78 walks also lead the system.

High-A -- Inland Empire 7, High Desert 5 -- Box

The 66ers opened up a lead with three unearned runs off of Stephen Landazuri (Talk40 #24), whose line was otherwise interesting: 3.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

Jordy Lara  had three hits, and Jabari Henry (26intheMix) added a triple.

Low-A -- Beloit 7, Clinton 4 -- Box

Tyler Pike (Talk40 #14) has been coming back from some injury time with some short outings.  Saturday's wasn't bad: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.

Dario Pizzano (26intheMix), Brock Hebert (26intheMix) and Martin Peguero (Watch List) each had a double plus a single.

Short Season-A -- Everett 5, Tri-Cities 1 -- Box

Well now ... a victory.

Tommy Burns was the man on the mound with a nice line: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.

Austin Wilson had a double and a single.  Let's check out his progress:

  • June: 7 G | .111/.172/.148
  • July: 28 G | .238/.322/.352
  • Aug.: 16 G | .298/.355/.596

I would call that moving in the right direction.

Rookie -- Pulaski 7, Elizabethton 6 -- Box

Give this game ball to Profit Isaiah!  Isaiah Yates (Talk40 #39): 3-for-4 with a double and two two-run homers.  And his second bomb, in the 8th, changed the scoreboard from 6-5 Twins to 7-6 Mariners.

Yates in August: .308/.400/.508.  And, since he was drafted out of high school at 17, he doesn't turn 19 till next week.

His K% went up this year, but he's still flashing some interesting upside.

Looking Ahead

Happy Taijuan Day!  Taijuan Walker (Talk40 #2) for Tacoma in Tucson.

[FYI: Tucson was a temporary home for the Padre club, formerly in Portland, which will move to a new ballpark in El Paso next year.]
