Which film took the top spot at the weekend box office?
Last week, I predicted that Gravity might finally fall from the top spot at the weekend box office, thanks in large part to Johnny Knoxville's new comedy Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. I was right. Gravity, it was a great run and you were an awesome 2013 film but it's time for a new box office winner, I suppose.
All total, the Jackass spin-off Bad Grandpa took in an impressive $32 million over its debut weekend. That's good enough for first place by a large margin over Gravity, which still managed second place with just over $20 million in ticket sales. For week four, that's still a really strong showing. Clearly, this film will continue to earn in the weeks to come.
Despite so-so critics reviews, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa attracted a huge audience. That's not at all surprising, considering how well the other Jackass movies have done. Did anyone see this movie over the weekend? If so, how does it compare to the other Jackass movies?
Let's break down the rest of the top five: Captain Phillips, the Tom Hanks drama that I saw and really liked over the weekend, was the number three movie at the box office with an $11.8 million take.
Unfortunately, the other major debut of the weekend, Ridley Scott's The Counselor, did not fare well at all. Even with the movie's impressive star power (Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz), The Counselor only managed fourth place, earning a pretty anemic $8 million. That's downright embarrassing, especially considering the huge marketing push behind this film.
And last but certainly not least: Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 was fifth at the weekend box office, taking in an additional $6.1 million. Until another animated family movie hits theaters, Cloudy's going to continue to do well.
Did anyone see anything in theaters over the weekend? Let's hear what you thought if you did!
