POTD Milton Bradley 2011-ff

Q.  What is Milton Bradley's situation?

A.  /cosign on releasing Bradley.  And SSI will even go so far as to gingerly guess that it's what they're going to do.

.

Q.  Why wouldn't they release Bradley?

A.  Large companies, with 4+ layers of management, operate under a lot of internal political pressure.  Any $$$-intensive "sunk cost" makes somebody look real bad, and it can weaken an exec's political capital if not actually shorten his rope.

A writeoff like this can reduce a director's Mario lives from two to one (though it doesn't here).

Everybody who chimed in on acquiring Bradley would take a painful hit if MB had to be released in May and ... what, $9,000,000 written off?

That's not just the Mariners.  That's any big company.  It's usually unfair to ask execs to step out into the dunking tank and take baseball throws like that.  Remember, my man Capt Jack is coming off the dreary Josh Lueke winter... we don't notice that he was able to nudge Oversight into approving that extra bat...

The M's are edgy, though, and if anybody would do it, I'd expect they would.

.

It wouldn't have a lot to do with Bradley's performance good or bad.  They knew he was a relative dead weight when they acquired him.  It's not like they now go, "Oh, okay, I guess Bradley's not going to help us much."

It's like they now go, "All right, the offense just scuttled another little roll we got on.  We can't carry this any more."

.

Q.  Was Bradley's defense really that bad over the weekend?

A.  It was gasp-inducing.

You know that Dr. D isn't married to pretty defense.  You know that he's been the biggest voice for moderation on Bradley's overall presence and personality.

But we were at two of the games Friday-Sunday ... that game Saturday might have been the single most embarrassing defensive game I've seen played in 40 years, being there live, I mean.

He was trotting after balls that landed one yard away from him at the end of the jog.  During Saturday's game, this occurred three separate times.  He caught a fourth ball, and a crowd full of Soccer Moms gave him a loud sarcastic ovation.  Soccer moms, mind you.  This ain't New Yawk.

He made some throw that left the playing field, I believe ... throwing from LF he might have made the 3B stands.

The word "stunned" gets thrown around a lot.  But I literally was stupefied.  I thought there must have been some non-baseball explanation for his actions in left field.

.

It was an interesting contrast, too, because during the same game, Michael Saunders made three separate Gold Glove plays in the power alleys.  It was a whale of a contest between Bradley and Saunders.

.

Q.  Can you write off his bat?

A.  We have been opining for several months that Bradley cannot catch up to a 93 fastball.

Not 96.  93.  And coming from SSI you know that's not FKey 7 dogma.  Literally, any decent 92-93 fastball out and over is by him.

Don't take my eye's word for it.  Here, we checked his pitch values on fastballs the last five years:

  • 2007 - +1.6 runs above average per 100 fastballs
  • 2008 - +1.6
  • 2009 - +1.2
  • 2010 - (-0.9)
  • 2011 - (-1.4)

Look.  There comes a point when you just have to give a guy's locker to the next man in line.

.

Q.  You think the M's got the guts?

A.  If SSI has figured these guys out ....

Here's their way of looking at it.  They watched him this weekend, and they went, "Well, patience is fine.  But if he can't even catch a fly ball any more, there's no excuse left to keep him."

.

Everybody gets old.  I should know.  :- )   The man played 1,000 games in the Big Show and made $35,000,000 at it.

Give him a big handshake and say g'bye.  He was a lot better athlete than you or I ever were.

.

Respectfully,

Jeff Clarke

Jeff,
Bradley was beginning to melt down a week ago, as established by the two boot jobs he got from umpires.
I didn't see the defensive (lack of) effort that you speak of, But I'm not surprised.
I've rooted for Milton.  If he is still here this evening and some other guy (Cust? Langerhans?) is gone, so be it.
But Milton was always a sunk cost with a low chance of return. Pink slipping him today, if he is the guy, is just fine.
However, right now he does have a decent bat....one of the three we currently have.

He should be Cust's platoon mate (we need someone who can hit lefties) and occasional left fielder...we do need to get him out of LF though...I agree with that part. But his bat has actually looked better the last several games.
We shouldn't give up anyone who has any hope of being effective in any offensive situation. Guys who should get canned right now:
Saunders, Langerhans, Ryan, Wilson, Giminez
Obviously we can't get rid of all of them...we need a backup catcher and we need at least one of Ryan and Wilson to play short at least some of the time and we need someone who can play an adequate CF until Gutierrez gets back, if he ever does. My pick for the ousting would go something like:
UP: M. Wilson, Bard, Ackley,
DOWN: Saunders
RELEASED: J. Wilson, Ray
Giminez stays on for now as a utility player...gets sent out when Aardsma is ready.

Mike Wilson was never - I mean NEVER - hitting in the middle of the order in Tacoma.  I don't know if he used Darren Brown's dog to test his transwarp theories or not, but he's definitely been in the doghouse.
However, Mike Wilson had the chance to LEAVE that doghouse, pick any other organization, and start over last offseason, and he re-signed with us.  I didn't get that.
I still don't understand Wilson, or the Ms view of Wilson.
I do agree that he's red-hot, and that of all the guys we have on the 40 man he's the one who could most provide what we need right now.
And I find it interesting that instead of sending Saunders down and playing the vet, we kept Saunders and his brutal plate struggles and apparently will until Guti gets back.  And Langerhans, who started off well, gets the axe.
Zduriencik doesn't take prisoners.  If you're the 25th man on the roster, you'd better be VERY nervous about being replaced.  Or the 24th, or 23rd...
I've always said Jack will dump a player the second he thinks that player cannot help him win.  He hasn't given up on Saunders, who is finally getting comfortable in center field even if he's a disaster at the plate.
Because he's proven he CAN play center, he doesn't HAVE to hit a ton to be valuable.  I expect us to send him down, have him keep working on his swing, and get him ready for his next shot (or for improving his trade value).
But this show of faith, as well as Wedge's adamant support of him in interviews, definitely seems designed to help his confidence.
I like it - both keeping Saunders over Langerhans and promoting Wilson.
Hopefully both moves bear future fruit.

Interesting stuff:  Wilson up, Langerhans out......Which has long been suggested by some, btw. Langerhans was bringing nothing of value and consuming a spot.
However,  It does mean, I suspect (and I applaud) that Wilson will get the chance to be an everyday MLB OF'er. He's going to be penciled in to LF or CF the majority of the days for a while, I a willing to bet.  Which is just as it should be...if you bring a guy up, let him play and prove (or not) his abilities.
Bringing him up at the start of a road trip makes sense, too.  Let him get acclimated to MLB before you bring him home.
I would suspect that the odd man out, most days, will be Cust.  Bradley's bat, while not smoking, is contributing.  Against some pitching you'll probably even see Wilson in center and Saunders in the dugout.
Saunders is on track for a record abysmal at-the-bat performance level for a full time MLB OF'er.  The modern game (since the 50's) has not seen a full time, long term, OF of his offensive inabilities.  He's beyond just working the kinks out and getting hot.  Sometimes a swing change does WAY more damage than good.....Saunders is living proof of that.  He is shot as a bat threat rigth now.
But Wilson's call-up is just right.
Ackley will be up soon.  Jack Wilson will probably be gone (I'ld bet in a trade).

If you're watching Bradley's at bats, he seems to be calming downa bit and getting better passes at the ball. I think he can still hit and will eventually...perhaps not against power pitchers, but against finesse guys, he still has uses. He can also help Cust against lefties.
Cutting Langerhans makes sense though...we don't need another elfty who can't make contact and has occasional power...that's what Saunders is for.

That would be pointless. Peguero can't hit big league pitching. Period. Not now at least. If they actually did that, I would be very surprised.

9

It's less about Peguero and more about Bradley.  Fully expect the Peguero addition to be short lived.  Have to make a move for a defensive centerfielder if Guti isn't ready in a week or so.

10

Wow. Bradley DFA's too.
Jack and Eric mean business this year. LOVE Eric's comments about refusing to settle for an offense that only scores 2 or 3 runs a game.

http://blog.thenewstribune.com/mariners/2011/05/09/milton-bradley-design...
------The Mariners finally made the move that everyone wanted and designated Milton Bradley for assignment. They recalled outfielder Carlos Peguero from Triple A Tacoma. ------
And there's the second half.  A week into May, Jack is busy turning over his roster, even with us lingering in some sort of contention.  He's trying to maximize the roster with what he has.
And Bradley and Langerhans can't help in his estimation.
Can't argue with him.

Bradley has ticked off his last team, I suspect. Powerflushed the guy despite him being one of the few who have a hope of helping the offense even a little...seems the team was VERY unhappy with him...especially the way he was playing the outfield. I can't fault them for that...but...I am surprised.
Very interesting.

13

with Bradley last year.  The signs were popping up all over the place that Bradley was about to lose his gourd again.
Jack got pre-emptive in aborting that problem.
But I agree, Peguero is NOT ready.  He can play for a little bit, but it surprises me to flush Langerhans the same day as Bradley.  If we were dumping Bradley today, wouldn't we need an outfielder?
Kennedy played some LF in spring training.  He'd be my guess to take over in LF and get some consistent playing time.  We'll see.
DEFinitely interesting.

Hoping to find a prize.
Really bad day to be Tui or Carp.  Obviously, they are gone and buried in Z's book.  No surprise, really, even though Carp has 5 HR.
Good day for Doc's "top-down-message" approach.  Guys who aren't helping us win games will be shown the door.

15

I approve!  These moves.....
1. Reward AAA performance, which is always a good policy when paracticable.
2. Established what Wedge will and will not stand for (Z gets tough, one year later)
3. Gives guys who might actually be future M's the chance to show.
4. Improves the team
Tomorrow night say hello to a Wilson, Peguero, Ichiro OF. Saunders sits until Guti is up and Saunders flies/drives to Tacoma.
Tomorrow night.....
1. Ichiro
2. Figgins
3. Cust or Kennedy
4. Olivo
5. Smoak
6. M. Wilson
7. Peguero
8. J. Wilson
9. Ryan
I will definately reschedule so I can watch!

16

At least the DFA of Bradley and Langerhans says that much. We're using a backup in CF and we cut two LFs at once?
Yeah, Mike's gonna get a look.  I'm happy for him.  And Kennedy will be able to platoon with him if necessary while working his way around the infield.
More at-bats for all the guys trying their hardest from the bench.
We'll see if Mike can land with the sort of splash few of our call-ups have recently.

Why was Wilson jacked around the way he was at Cheney?  Never got an explanation for that.
Would be very curious to hear the (real) reason why.  It's not like he alienated the M's coaches in ST, so why should he do so in AAA?

19

Jim Bouton talked about a plane ride like that with the 1960's Yankees where somebody pulled out a harmonica and played a very respectful, soulful "Taps"...
..........
The historian James believes in the concept that players perform differently when their orgs truly expect excellence.  Not hope for it, but expect it and insist on it.
Jeff C the M's fan is simply giddy with the Wedge/Zduriencik tandem.  I LOOOOOOOVVVVVE them.
...........
Any chance now that the payroll managers might expect excellence of themselves as well?

"I'm not dead!" insists Carp. (Like the character in the Monty Python Holy Grail cart scene)
I wouldn't be surprised to see a Carp for Cust swap at some point.  Carp has refound his stroke....and can play some LF/1B
I might even bet on that unless Cust finds his.
moe

22

If Carp is in a groove, that might be my third "throw over the buffet tables" evening of the season.
First one bought the M's three weeks' worth of winning.  Let's see whether Black Sunday buys the M's another near-month worth of Hansen Brothers baseball...  maybe they'll keep that third detonation in their hip pocket for a few...
Did I say I love to root for organizations that want to win?

23

LOVE that last line, Doc. It definitely needs to be accountability at ALL levels, not just the footsoldiers.
This decisive action early in the season is gratifying to see. It may not help the team a great deal, Peguero clearly showed before that he was not ready, but it sets a tone. Besides, I can't help but smell an MLB-certified import (not necessarily big bucks) coming as soon as it can happen. My guess, Peguero is and Wilson are placeholders who, if they happen to show something more than expected, can earn a longer look. Meanwhile Jack may already have a potential deal in the works that just needs time to mature.
The season (and the ATTENDANCE) may hang in the balance right now. I don't think Jack wants to see it slide into a lost cause just has hope has been kindled. As Sandy said elsewhere, the pitching may not continue at quite the high level it has shown thus far, even so does not constitute the 120-ish ERA+ that has been discussed, and a continuation of the offense as it is guarantees a disaster of a season.
It's just really hard for me to believe that Z/Wedge really think Wilson and Peguero are the solution to the lack of offense. Thus the place-holders idea.

24
ghost's picture

We've already established that Peguero cannot hit any more than Saunders can. We also know that Saunders CAN play a good defensive CF and will help Wilson in left. Saunders will continue to start until Guti is ready IMHO, at which point he'll become a back-up or get AAA'ed.
Otherwise, I agree that these moves change the complexion of the ballclub for the better and send a powerful message about expectations. We'll see how it turns out tomorrow.

25
ghost's picture

...if we had a viable replacement. Carp....not sold on him, but if he gets hot, maybe that move is possible. I should think that Giminez would be worried right now since Wedge doesn't seem to want to play him and you've got a switch-hitting Bard capable of outhitting him and being a more natural platoon buddy for Olivo. I would also be very depressed if I were Chris Ray and Wilhelmson and Cortes.

26

For what that's worth.  Wanna see something interesting?  That huge man in center field in the majors would definitely be...interesting...
~G

27

Figgins was at his best in my opinion when he was a Jack Of All Trades.  His value goes up when he plays the outfield (don't know if he can play center) and the infield.  He might not protest after the message that Jack just layed down on the team.  I'd rather have Rodriguez and Kennedy get AB's than Peguero.

28
glmuskie's picture

I don't feel too bad for them.  If they want to OPS 1.100 for a couple months, killing offspeed stuff and catching up to mid-90's fastballs, I imagine Z would either find a place on the roster or trade them to a team that could use 'em.

29

Yeah...I don't think his size would translate well long term...but it's fine as a stopgap.
