Ladies and gentlemen, they did it! There were so many weeks of uncertainty, many weeks where we trailed behind the Everett Silvertips in particular, but the Seattle Thunderbirds pulled it off and beat the Spokane Chiefs on Tuesday night, securing the title and becoming the US Division Champions. The big win marks the 11th win in a row for the Birds and there were 5,707 at the ShoWare Center to witness this historic moment.
Landon Bow, already celebrated for his seven shutouts and status as Goaltender of the Week, nearly had another shutout notch during the game; he only allowed one goal to pass into the Birds’ net. After saving 18 shots out of 19, his score is now an impressive 24-2-4-0 and he is well on his way to being one of the most beloved players on the team, especially if his new fan hashtag, #BowMyGod, is any indication!
Only one goal was scored during the first period, but it was a Bird goal. Scott Eansor took it with assists from Donovan Neuls and Nolan Volcan. Seattle scored two more goals during the second period, with Jared Hauf and Matthew Barzal both scoring. Eansor and Neuls had assists on the former. In the final period, Turner Ottenbreit scored with assists from Smith and Eansor. Spokane made their only goal during this period, making the final score 4-1. To celebrate, Seattle is offering fans a fun new US Division Championships wallpaper to download and use on their gadgets.
Don’t forget that this Saturday night is Fan Appreciation Night. There are all kinds of prizes to be had, including dozens of O'Reilly Auto Parts Prizes, some Agave Free Meal Coupons, some Essenza Luxury Soap "Lucky Row" Prizes, a Signed Cool Bird Bobble Head, a signed Matthew Barzal Bobble Head and plenty of other fun items. Seattle has won 15 of their last 16 games. Let’s hope the momentum keeps going from here and they carry it into the playoff games, which are coming up on March 25 and 26. We know the Birds will be playing but we don’t know who just yet. Stay tuned to find out who they will be taking on first and be sure to get your tickets early. As with single game tickets, playoff tickets can be purchased during normal box office hours as well as through the website.
