Not only did the United States National Team have a huge victory over Guatemala in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday, but that victory was massive. The final score was 4-0, much to the celebration of U.S. fans. Sounders fans were especially excited to see this match because Clint Dempsey made his 14th career goal in World Cup qualifying matches, an historic goal scored during the 12th minute of the match.
What Seattle fans are especially excited about is that Dempsey’s goal puts him even closer to the all-time high for the USMNT. He has a total of 49 career goals made with USMNT now, only trailing behind Landon Donovan by 8 goals. Not only that, but Tuesday’s goal was an historic moment because he passed Donovan for first place for the first time in all of USMNT history.
Andrew King tweeted a quote from Dempsey that pretty much sums up the experience: “You’ve got to look within yourself, man. How bad do you want it? How bad do you want to go to the World Cup? How bad do you want to continue progressing the game in the States? You’ve got to put that on your shoulders, man. You’ve got to represent your country with pride and I think the boys did that tonight.”
Sounders fans thought so, too, as they took to social media praising Dempsey and the rest of the team. It was high time to have something to celebrate, too, since it has been a rough regular MLS season up to this point without any wins under the Rave Green belt. Dempsey was able to play all 90 minutes and he’ll be back in the Emerald City on Wednesday to train, then he should be in the game on Saturday when the Sounders take on Montreal.
Other Sounders in the game included Marco Pappa, former Sounder now playing for Guatemala, who entered during the second half of the game, and Sunderland defender DeAndre Yedlin, who played the whole match for the USMNT side. During the Trinidad & Tobago qualifying match, Sounder Joevin Jones also scored a goal, his second in his second qualifier this year. Trinidad & Tobago won over the Vincy Heat, and Sounders forward Oalex Anderson played for 90 minutes for the Heat, as did S2 forward Myron Samuel, though Samuel was on the field for 73 minutes.
