=== Erik Bedard, $7 ===
Ah, now we're getting somewhere :- )
THE BEARDED PROPHET: When healthy, dominates. Not only racks up strikeouts, but pitches with polish (K:BB) and mixes GB% (groundball rate) into the bargain.
Has NEVER topped 200 innings. Let others chase the dream.
.
The Mainframe Sez: We can certainly understand a reluctance to go, say, $15 roto. But to top him out at $7? We're guessing that Ron has blown a dollar or two on Erikkk in the past :- )
Pitching only 81 and 83 innings (!) in 2008 and 2009, he was still worth +30 runs in those two years. And +100 runs (10 wins) in 2006-07.
A little weird to complain that a guy "has never topped 200 innings" when he has, in fact, topped +5 WAR twice ... and averaged +3.5 WAR the last five years, even with the injuries.
.
Harden and Sheets, if their arms aren't right they can pitch lousy. Bedard, on the other hand, if he can throw, he dominates.
Obviously there's a good 50% that he'll hit a wall in March, but if he doesn't, he's $15 easy. The $15 selig rotobux are only after he hits four-five innings in Arizona, naturally.
Would anybody here be happy to see the Angels poach Bedard, and then hear that he was throwing good as we went into April? Yuk.
.
Capt Jack: I was pleased to see the latent emotion in Zduriencik's comments as he announced Bedard's 2011 contract.
Zduriencik has groomed this alpaca for two years in expectation of a Savile Row blazer, and Zduriencik obviously sees Bedard as much more of a practical investment of time than we 'net rats do.
We happily agree. Easiest thing in the world to wave off Bedard. The guys spending real time, and real money, aren't.
