What do you do?

Earlier this week, I was able to meet a new mother to our homeschool group that I really connected with. It’s always nice to meet someone who shares so many values with you, especially in the homeschooling community. We had a really great chat, and my friend K, also in our group, asked her about what she does—then clarified that she meant as a passion, not as a job or work. The mom told us about our interests and it made me think about how lucky I am.

All about: Horseradish

I love horseradish so much, but I have had to abstain ever since I switched to a low carb diet. I have yet to find a commercial horseradish preparation that doesn't include sugar, even though most actual recipes for horseradish don't add sugar. For some reason in America, we can't send anything out the door without sugar in it, though. And thus, commercial horseradish is sweetened. (Why though, seriously?)

This week I decided to finally buckle down and make my own horseradish. It turned out to be so easy that I wonder why I didn't try this sooner.

Microwaved eggplant? Really?

I have always found eggplant to be a challenge. About once a year I get suckered into buying one, usually because they look so beautiful plump and delicious. And I like eggplant when other people cook it, like at a restaurant. But every time I have tried to make it myself, it has been a complete unmitigated disaster. As in, "Throw that away and fix something else for dinner" level disaster.

Tasty Tidbits: Pumpkin pie ice cream

The fall is quickly approaching, and what better way to celebrate than prepare pumpkin everything? My family always makes pumpkin bread—save for the year with the pumpkin shortages—and pumpkin pie, but this pumpkin pie ice cream is a cool idea that we haven’t tried yet. If you have some pie filling and some oatmeal cookies, you are already halfway there.

All about: Brown rice

I like to use this "All About" column to demystify one of the strange foods we know we should be eating more of, but don't know how to handle. I have learned a lot about this stuff over the last few years, but these foods were impenetrable to me until I buckled down and started learning about them. Over the weekend I had a conversation with someone about brown rice which made me feel better about knowing so little about brown rice until recently. Clearly I was not alone on that!

B-Movie Review: The Last Airbender (2010)

I have caught bits and pieces of this film at random before, but finally decided it was time to sit down and watch the entire movie.  The Last Airbender, for those that don’t know, is an M. Night Shyamalan project.  Now, back in the day, he was a decent director.  This movie, however, proves that the man has absolutely nothing left in him.  By the end of the film I was left not only wondering what happened, but also trying to figure out how anyone could have made this pile of rubbish.

Red Wing Brewery, Red Wing

For couples that need a break from all those wine tours, consider spending a day trying out some of the best beer that the state has to offer.  A little over an hour southeast from Minneapolis, the Red Wing Brewery is a classic brewery that has been around for half-a-century and uses some recipes that have been around much longer than that.  Since the brewery only sells its brews at the actual site, you’ll be drinking what most people in the world (and even the state) will never get a chance to.  They’re open every afternoon, so crui

Friday Fun: Make and takes for Grandparents’ Day

With Grandparent’s Day just around the corner, Kiwi Crate has been posting some really fun-looking activities to do for Grandma and Grandpa. You can make these cute homemade postcards, some homemade hand scrub, or these painted golf tees. Of course, making something personal that comes from your heart is always best!
