Want good coffee? Avoid the bulk bins

I'm old enough to remember when bulk coffee bins, and the do-it-yourself coffee grinder, were new additions to the grocery store. It was exciting, at the time, to grind your own beans. This was back before the explosion of Starbucks and local coffee houses, when good coffee was largely unknown, and most of us were still drinking Folgers and their ilk.

In that environment, the bulk beans WERE an improvement. The beans were darker and better roasted, and grinding it there at the store didn't just smell great, it also gave you fresher coffee compared to Folgers.

Bizarre summer vacation events in the U.S.

Most people, when they go trekking across the U.S. come vacation time, tend to prefer to visit the standard places.  National parks, amusement parks, wonders of nature and great festivals and celebrations are common places to find people from all over the country and beyond congregating and relaxing.  Some folks, however, have a taste for the unusual and may not be completely satisfied at the end of a vacation unless they have gotten in some quality time with the more bizarre and unusual attractions of the country.  Being that I happen to be one of those peo

Comic Convention Intro and Beginner’s Survival Guide

Soapmaking trials

I think every crafter, hobbyist and DIY-er eventually gives soapmaking a try. That must be the case, at any rate, given how many soapmaking supplies are available for sale at your local Michael's and Joann's. In fact, they sell so much great soapmaking stuff that you barely have to do a thing. It doesn't seem like much of a challenge, is what I'm saying, which is probably why I tried to make it harder than I had to.

Girl Scout cookies app: The search for Samoas just got easier

It’s that time of year again. Girl Scouts are selling their famous cookies (or infamous cookies if you’re still sticking to your New Year’s resolutions). If it isn't easy enough to give in to your sweet tooth when those persuasive scouts come knocking, now you can seek them out. That’s right. The new Girl Scout Cookie Finder makes those Thin Mints, now just a touch away, even more difficult to resist.

How do we approach the reoccurring issue of performance-enhancing drugs?

I remember looking up to sport stars like Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds when I was younger, thinking that when I grew up, I wanted to be just like them. As I got older and began participating in endurance sports, I found myself drawn to figures like Lance Armstrong and Bernard Lagat. While I knew that sports would never be a career for me, I did see these people as more than athletes. I felt like they were role models.
