Drafter Jack

I couldn't resist the image Doc. Looks like good stuff!

In 2009 Jack Z. got his first shot at a draft as GM of the M's. Those '09 guys should be MLB contributors by now, if he got it right.

The guys he picked in 2010 should be contributors in Seattle, if he got it right.

The guys taken in 2011 should be knocking on the door, if not here already. The best of the guys taken in '12 should be nearly here.

Young outfield bats are what I'm most looking for in return. With #Austin Wilson looking like a total bust at #Bakersfield, I'd love to find an athletic corner outfield type like that to add to the mix.

On the other hand, if a team offers you something truly interesting for #Austin #Jackson or LoMo, why not go for it? The Mariners had David Ortiz in their system back almost two decades ago, and they traded him for Dave Hollins if I'm not mistaken. I'm not criticizing that trade at all. I'm saying that Ortiz (David Arias at the time) was "interesting" and that's about it. But, you know, you collect those guys where you can, stockpile them on your farm and see which ones develop.

Q. M's go down 3-0 ... and then the BOTTOM of the order erupts. 5 runs in the 3rd inning, and before there was a single out. Just one of those things, no?

A. Just one of those things, No. The lousy half of the lineup played really well for five at-bats in a row. It wasn't just Dr. D's interpretation, though of course that is unimpeachable. Blowers (one of the most accurate color analysts we've heard) remarked on the quality "approaches" as they occurred and refrained on it after the fact.

To try to answer your question Doc about 7 years ago...
I doubt it makes a difference with the Cliff Lee trade, as Smoak was supposed to be power plus OBP...
It may have made a difference with the Pineda trade, but again Montero was supposed to be power with great hit ability...
The dreaded Fister trade was to get Wells, who was a young unproven OF with moderate power and good OBP... so I doubt a difference there..
Figgins definitely happens.
Ackley definitely happens.
