Knitting mitered corners
Obviously the easiest way to knit a square is to cast on your stitches and go, knitting forward until you have made a square. But if you want to jazz things up a little, mitered squares are a great way to go.

Let it go
A few weeks ago, I wrote about how much I loved Frozen, and how I am adopting its main song (which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award), “Let It Go,” as my anthem. As I move into 2014, I find myself letting go of more things that are not important—and especially things that drive me nuts.

New DVD releases include 'Fast & Furious 6' and 'Despicable Me 2'
Be honest: Have you found time to kick back with a good movie or two this past week? Or are you frantically shopping, decorating and prepping for the holidays? I'm attempting to do both, and I'll throw in a good bit of TV time watching football to boot. I'm thankful for a lot of things, but at the end of the day, I'm really thankful for DVD releases. I love my theater movies, but I just can't always make time to go. I missed this week's two biggest rental releases in theaters, but I definitely won't miss them now.

Over the last three years, Doug Fister has the 9th-highest WAR total in baseball. Per that metric, he's added more value than Cole Hamels, Zack Greinke or Gio Gonzalez. He's way ahead of Jon Lester, Matt Cain, and C.J. Wilson, and he's equal to David Price.
Going by FIP, Doug Fister has been the #5 starter in the American League the last three years. He's behind Felix, Verlander, Price, and Sale. Ahead of everybody else, including CC Sabathia, James Shields, Yu Darvish, etc.

The Nationals apparently nabbed Fister for (about) the price of Erasmo Ramirez, Charlie Furbush, and (maybe) John Jaso. Doogie has two years of arb eligibility left, figuring to pull down about $7M and 10M in the next two seasons, respectively.

Finger knitting: A way to make it useful
When I was in high school, there was a brief but intense fad among many of the students for finger knitting. We bought big skeins of Red Heart multicolored yarn and carried them with us everywhere, finger knitting away. We ended up with these huge ropes of yarn, and then what? This lack of a use for the final product is what finally killed the trend.
It's too bad I didn't know then what I know now, because over the weekend I was able to use a finger knit rope to make a really great scarf, in only 20 minutes!

Making cranberry sauce from scratch
As we ramp up to Thanksgiving, it's time to start giving thought as to recipes for The Big Day. If you are lucky enough to just be bringing a side dish to Thanksgiving dinner, I highly recommend making cranberry sauce from scratch.
