New trailer alert: 'CBGB'

I have a special spot in my heart for CBGB. The legendary and now defunct New York club was one of the first places I went when I visited Manhattan for first time many years ago. This was long after bands like the Ramones and Blondie graced the ridiculously small, dirty stage. Still, it was a huge deal for me, as I sat listening to one of the worst bands I've ever heard in my life. I don't even remember the name of the group (really, they were just awful), but that didn't matter.

Unusual Crafts: Blythe dolls

I am always fascinated by the intersection of fandom and craft, and Blythe dolls sit perfectly on that line. And they draw my attention even more, because I have never been even the slightest bit interested in playing with dolls. Not now, and not as a child. This means that I find it fascinating to see people spending so much time on their Blythe dolls, and the meticulous care they use to construct their scenes.

Personal List: 10 Timeless Movies

At the suggestion of another of my fellow Klat writers, I decided that instead of doing my typical movie series review this week, I would present a list of some movies that I feel are timeless.  And though this list is far from being a complete picture of all the films that I can personally watch over and over and over, it does attempt to at least bring to the table ten flicks that never get old.  You may agree with me, you may not and, if you’ve been locked in the basement most of your life, you may have actually not seen some of these (I suggest you remedy that immediately!).  But whatever your own opinion, mine is that these are films that will never get old, carrying on from one generation to the next to become forever part of movie history, for better or for worse.  Enjoy.

Bittman's "How to Cook Everything" app reviewed

I am pleasantly disposed towards Mark Bittman. The New York Times food writer not only has to work with a small kitchen (just like me!) he also has a flair for simple, practical recipes that turn out great without a lot of fuss or bother. I have made several of Bittman's recipes in the past and had great success, which is more than I can say for most other celebrity chefs. (And Bittman's recipe for popovers was kind of life-changing. So easy! So good!)

Interesting Crafts: Jewish needlepoint

I forget what I was looking for, but I recently followed a whole long rabbit trail that led me to the subject of Jewish needlepoint crafts. Not being a religious person myself, I had no idea that Jewish needlepoint was "a thing." I was dimly aware of Christian needlepoint, in the form of Footprints embroidery projects and an endless parade of cross stitched crosses. But the Jewish needlework scene takes it to a whole new level.

Pet safety on Independence Day

I had no idea that the more pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other day of the year—did you? This image has some great tips on keeping your pets safe for the holiday. Some of these include keeping a recent photo of your pet handy, walking your pet early before the festivities start, and playing with your pets away from fireworks and grills.

Favorite new trailer: 'The Wolf of Wall Street'

Once again, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are teaming up for a huge movie and once again, the Oscar buzz is starting long before said movie ever hits the theaters. I'm talking about the upcoming drama The Wolf of Wall Street, an adaptation of the memoir of questionable banker Jordan Belfort. His story is quite remarkable, and certainly criminal - but never dull.
