Finally, I managed to squeeze in a couple of free hours to take in the latest Ron Howard-directed movie, the sports drama Rush, in the theater. We just got back and I wanted to give a snap review, before my thoughts turn to more pressing matters, like work (boo, hiss). In a nutshell? Rush is fantastic. If you're on the fence about seeing it, just hop on over to the greener pasture and go see this movie.
This morning there was a mad dash among newspapers nation-wide to create a cover for the government shutdown. Everyone pretty much agrees that the New York Daily News won the day with this one. YEP.

Make no mistake: Oscar awards season is in full swing. So many excellent films are slated to come out in the next few weeks and months, it's almost dizzying. I love covering summer blockbusters, but I must confess: I love my Academy Award-caliber movies just as much (if not more). With that in mind, I am still trying to keep track of all the latest and greatest movies, and I'm throwing this one out as a strong contender right now: Captain Phillips.

SSI readers have pointed out, with mild alarm, that the dam is breaking on the Mariners at every point simultaneously:
Why is this happening?
Dr. D's analysis, in this specific case, isn't biased. I stopped being emotionally affected by Lincoln and Armstrong about 2005 or so. Geoff Baker learned within his first 30 days on the job what the problem was, and it was the same one that Dr. D and Silentpadna had been whining about since August 1, 2001. Geoff is, in 2013, manifesting the anger and frustration that I was manifesting in 2004-05.
Larry Stone has restrained himself so far, but has decided to restrain himself a lot less. It's not clear to me --- > to what extent Stone understands the fact that the problem is not Zduriencik.
Jerry Brewer, apparently, fails to grok the front-office problem. There's nothing in his recent hit piece on Zduriencik that wasn't in David Cameron's hit piece -- Brewer's column is essentially a rip of Zduriencik for abandoning old friends, naming Carmen Fusco and Tony Blengino as examples. It's honestly surprising to me that the Seattle Times allows this kind of re-written article, especially from its lead sportswriter; Klat wouldn't accept that article from me even as a blog post, because it wouldn't pass their plagiarism standards. I don't mean it pejoratively. I mean it objectively.

The very definition of elegance and class, the pricey and exclusive 230 Fifth is the largest rooftop lounge in the entire city. Occupying two stories, you can sit indoors and enjoy the lounge or head upstairs to take in the views from the rooftop garden. And 230 Fifth offers more than just a place to wet your whistle, as they have a full menu. For those looking to meet someone in a classier environment, this is a great place to start. You’ll be paying a bit more for the atmosphere, but the views of the

At long last, the big blockbuster that helped to kick off the wildly successful summer blockbuster season has arrived on DVD: Iron Man 3 is out. If you missed this one in theaters, it's time to pop this one into the player and kick back with a little Marvel action.
I'm a huge fan of the original Iron Man movie, but I wasn't crazy about the second installment in the franchise. Sure, I love Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark (aka Iron Man), but for me part two left much to be desired - especially when the first film was so darn great.
On the morning of September 12, 2013, the New York City Ballet released this video. Shot at sunrise on the roof of the 4 World Trade Center tower, the piece is titled "New Beginnings" and it is amazing.
