Girl Scouts testing gluten-free cookies

After figuring out that I can't handle wheat, I was relieved when the annual onslaught of Girl Scout cookies came, because I had a built-in resistance. Now instead of seeing delicious cookies, I saw the three days of stabbing abdominal pains they would cause me. It made it a lot easier to pass them up on my way in and out of the grocery store.

New DVD releases this week: Great options

We might be in a bit of a slump at the box office, but at least we're getting a whole lot of excellent DVD offerings right now. I'm really enjoying catching up on so many fun movies I missed last year. I might go to the theater almost weekly, but that doesn't mean I actually see everything I want to see. If I win the lottery? You bet I'll see everything. But until then, I'm just thankful for $1 rentals and Netflix.

Movie review: 'Blue Jasmine'

I don't know about you guys but I almost never wind up picking more than one perfectly awesome rental movie in the same weekend. Usually, I grab a second thinking it's just a backup - in case I hate the first film I've picked. This weekend, I am so excited, because in the span of 24 hours I saw not one, but two outstanding films with notably outstanding acting performances: Blue Jasmine and Captain Phillips (which I will review, very soon). There is a reason both of these films are so highly regarded by critics.

One Writer’s Journey

This week I decided to take some time out to share a personal story. And yes, it’s media-related! After about two-and-a-half years, on the day of January 24th, 2014, my finished novel was officially published. While I went the route of self-publishing instead of using traditional methods (a choice that may haunt my sales), just the act of having my words finally available to the world is, perhaps, the greatest thing I have ever done with my life. So I thought I’d share a little about that here and maybe inspire another writer or two as they make their own long journey to that seemingly out-of-reach finish line.

Animals and Dating in New York

Normally one wouldn’t think of New York as the place to go when you want to experience a bit of the wild. For lovers of animals, however, it’s not a compete loss. New York has plenty of animal-themed attractions nearby and if you’re looking to impress your date and have a good time, one of these can be the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Sealife aficionados might consider heading to south Brooklyn and checking out the New York Aquarium. Or if you don’t want to wander too far from home, check out the Central Park Zoo.

New on DVD this week: Two notable Oscar-nominees

January might be slow as far as theater releases go, but for DVDs? Oh yeah, we're in luck. The newest DVD and Blu-ray releases look extremely promising, and for those of us who need to watch the Oscar nominees, well, we now have our chance. Plus, there's a great horror documentary about the Nightmare on Elm Street series being released on Blu-ray (for the first time) that I am sure will interest fans of the films and the genre in general.
