NYC Event Watch - June 28th

There’s way too much going on in NYC to know every little festival and event that wanders through. And thanks to me, you don’t have to! Here are a few upcoming and ongoing events that might be right up your alley.

Pride Week - Through June 29th

Pride Week is winding up this Sunday, so if you haven’t had a chance to take part in the festivities, now is the time. The Pride March will take place all day and if you’ve never seen this parade before, you’ll definitely want to stop by.

Theater Watch: June 28th

Looking to get away from the typical New York theater date? Check out some of these alternative events that present great theater without costing you an arm and a leg.

Shakespeare in the Park - Delacorte Theater - Through July 6th

Steer clear of the usual theater performances by heading to Central Park where you can see some free Shakespeare. On the agenda this week is Much Ado About Nothing. A fun way to enjoy a performance while relaxing in a casual atmosphere.

Don’t Forget to Check Out the Fireworks This July 4th

The fourth of July is coming and that means fireworks. But where in New York is the best place to see a great display of colorful explosions aside from Macy’s? Here are a couple you might want to consider before you make your final choice:

Coney Island - They already put on displays every Friday, and since the 4th falls on a Friday this year, it should be extra special. The festivities begin at 9:30pm, though you might want to consider showing up early if you want a good spot.

NYC Gets Its Own Death Museum!

Tired of looking at great works of art that depict things of a more traditional nature? Sick of science and natural history museums? Well, New York is putting a new establishment into the mix - The Morbid Anatomy Museum.

This new Brooklyn-based showcase will feature all sorts of strange and interesting death-focused exhibits, from a spirit photo booth to jewelry made from human remains. If you’re in the mood to take a walk on the darker side of things, this may be right up your alley. The place opens up this weekend, so head down and check it out.

Some People Just Suck - Metropolitan Opera Artworks Vandalized

It is a tragic day in the history of New York, as someone took it upon themselves to break into the Metropolitan Opera and vandalize several works of art in the music hall. The defacement in question consisted of curse words and other profanities that were marked across several statues and paintings, one of which was worth upwards of $50,000.

Woman Can’t Tell Reality from Fiction, Sues NYC

It seems as if people trying to sue the city of New York has become the latest trend. The most recent case is perhaps the most ridiculous yet. A woman has decided that she is going to sue the Metropolitan Transportation Authority because she was frightened by one of the adverts they put up. As the story goes, she was walking down some stairs, turned back to see if her husband was there, saw a poster for the Dexter TV show and then stumbled and fell down the stairs.

Fear Not, NYC, for Your Giant Sodas Are Safe

It’s finally official - the city of New York may consume sodas of any size that they please. The ban on sodas larger than 16 ounces, implemented by the city’s health department, was shot down once again. And while this may not be the healthiest thing for people in general, businesses that rely on high levels of sugary consumption are pleased. Movie theaters, restaurants, sports venues and all the rest are rejoicing at the ruling.

Take Your Date Out for Coffee

When you’re meeting someone for the first time, one of the best destinations to get to know each other better is none-other-than a coffee shop, and New York has more than its fair share of great cafes. DTUT on the Upper East Side is one place to check out. They have comfortable couches for lounging and if you stick around until later you can even share a few drinks of the stronger variety. Or head to The Chipped Cup, a quaint coffee shop for those that prefer a smaller and more atmospheric venue to hang out at.
