On Mark Trumbo
We all like shiny things. Can I interest you in a holograph?

.

There's a whale of a lot of interesting shtick in the Shout Box on the Trumbinator.  There's a whale of a lot of extremely "retro" shtick coming from Dave Stewart about said Trumbinator.

Now, it takes a whale of a lot to get Dr. D to call baloney on Good Ole Boyz Shtick for no other reason than that it's Good Ole Boyz, but .... :- )  Dave Stewart is one of the elite few who can do so.  At will.  Force Dr. D to call baloney, that is.

Stewart is wayyyyy hardcore, you unnerstan', and interprets absolutely everything in known civilization through this prism.  In every interview we've ever seen, at least.

As such (a guy who "gets" hardcore mano-a-mano baseball) he does what Lloyd McClendon does .... except with a very unfortunate hard left turn towards "you folks wouldn't understand anything about this game.  Not the way we play it."  Like Mojo sez, if your GM is apologizing for a young, healthy pro athlete having to play left field, there are prolly some lizards in the cellar.

That said, where is Dr. D on the Trumbinator?

Cutting through a long, LONG list of plusses and minuses on the balance sheet, let's consider a good old Bill James stat called "Runs Created Per 27 Outs."  It seems to Dr. D the dominant theme in this particular chess position:

Year Age League Park RC/27
2010 24 AL Not Safeco 0.0 (14 AB)
2011 25 AL Not Safeco 4.3
2012 26 AL Not Safeco 5.2
2013 27 AL Not Safeco 4.3
2014 28 NL Not Safeco 3.8
2015 29 ? Hopefully not Safeco 3's?  4's?

.

We're talking about a corner defender who is already -10, -15 runs defensively.  He's going to carry the mail for you offensively.  He just finished his age 27 and 28 seasons putting how many runs on the board?

Hey, you don't go by any one stat.  But 4.3 and 3.8 are the kinds of numbers you expect from Chris Taylor, not from your Big Offseason Move.  NOR FROM YOUR LITTLE OFFSEASON MOVE, GUMBY.

....

Citizens For Equal Time Dept:  Trumbo does have Corey Hart-type power indexes, and those kinds of guys are in with a puncher's chance.  There is some possibility, let us say 10% or 20%, that he'll have his best year in 2015 -- that being a .500 SLG in a neutral park, or a .450 SLG in Safeco.

/equal time

(Yes, it was unconscionable to slip Corey Hart's name in there to represent the player population sporting 150 PX's, when this is supposed to be equal time.  My boss's name is Grant.  He'd love to hear from you.)

.....

I'm just kiddin' round with the SSI denizens who favor The Trumbinator.  Kinda.  But here is where that "Proven RH Power" looks to me like the scrap of tinfoil paint on a holographic Pokemon card.  You can put a hard sleeve on it and sell it for seven bucks, but the buyer ain't gonna be me.

My $0.02,

Dr D

Absoluely agreed on this one, Doc - 100%. Trumbo is both not as good a hitter as Saunders and not as good a fielder...throw in not as good a baserunner and I don't see the point.

DH him!

I'm not buying his glove.  I'm paying for 30+ homers to support the stars like Cano and Seager.
