More "athleticism" to cover the OF? I despise the use of the word "athleticism" is such a context. Larry #Bird wasn't a terrific athlete? Frank Thomas wasn't a terrific athlete? Bah! Speed does not necessarily equal "athleticism." Usain Bolt is likely a so-so "athlete" (in terms of ALL athletic skills) but he can run like the wind. What DiPoto likely means is "we need to cover more ground in LF vs. RHP. And he may be hinting that Cruz may get some DH time next year. Maybe. I doubt he is saying that Cruz isn't enough of an athlete to play RF (he isn't great, but if Dipoto is saying that then we're looking to replace 2 OF positions)! #Jackson was surely athletic enough to play CF. Jones covers ground (can't hit). Miller hasn't looked terrible out there. O'Malley has been fine, etc. Guti...Not an athlete in LF? Egads! He was a Gold Glove winner in CF, for goodness sake. So we're down to is Smith in LF (not a good fielder: a negative dWAR his entire career), Trumbo in a COF spot (he should have been at 1B instead of Morrison) and whether Miller is a CF or LF (or SS). I would read what he's saying is "Trumbo isn't playing OF much (he was a full time 1B with /DiPoto/LAA in '11, mostly an OF in '12 then back to 1B---I assume after the failed experiment in '12---in '13); Smith may be gone if Trumbo stays (or the other way around) and Miller is in CF or LF next year. BTW: Flores K's in the 15-18% range all through his MiLB career. Walks, too. He's a "strike zone" kind of guy. And my guy, Pizzano, is just DiPoto's cup of tea!! Goody for that!!
