Woman Strikes Big Subletting Rent-Controlled Apartment on Airbnb

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the hotel and B&B alternative, Airbnb. Most of that comes from already existing accommodations that don’t like the extra competition. There are also some concerns about how to regulate such things, particularly regarding health and safety issues. But Airbnb continues to operate and one individual in NYC has even managed to make more than $60,000 off of renting her place. Unfortunately, she’s been renting out a rent-controlled, government-subsidized apartment.

While I don’t have a problem with Airbnb and believe that hotels should make their rooms more affordable if they want to compete, there’s something scammy about renting a rent-controlled apartment. Even if subletting an apartment is legal, there should at least be something in place that allows the apartment owners and the government agency responsible for helping pay the rent to get a piece of the pie. Let the lady use Airbnb, but she needs to split it with those who are forced to take a hit for her benefit.
