Learn to Pick Locks at Pioneer Works

Who among us hasn't dreamed of being a secret agent gifted in the art of sneaking in and out without detection? Or simply wished we'd remembered to grab our house keys from that little bowl by the door on our way to the movies? Whether your goal is to level up your skill set in covert operations, root out a solution for chronic forgetfulness, or you're simply interested in becoming a locksmith someday, Pioneer Works in Red Hook has just the strange and lovely thing for you.

For $65, you can register for Lock Picking: Open Source Security, a small class offering a unique opportunity to study the history and evolution of locking mechanisms, as well as grab some hands-on experience with real lock picking equipment. Guided by security specialist Tantric Fancher, the class covers padlocks, handcuffs, basic locks and more, and stands out as one of the more interesting – not to mention potentially useful – educational experiences to had by the general public in NYC.

Pioneer Works is reputed for hosting a multitude of downright fascinating exhibitions, lectures, workshops and “off the beaten path” classes for both kids and adults, from dream analysis to the mysterious art of Suminagashi. This latest class - held in early January - is no less than one might expect from them. Register on your own or treat someone special to a fun and informative date they'll most likely never forget.
