Ullr must have forgotten when the season starts

Late snow keeps Colorado ski resorts open late.

It is no secret that Colorado weather is mercurial. One day it may be high 70s and sunny, while that night the weather transforms into epic snow for the upcoming day. This can happen basically any month of the year. With weather being unpredictable, deciding whether or not to buy a ski pass can always be a struggle. While most Coloradans buy a pass regardless, and stick to their ski schedule until the bitter end, sometimes the decision can bite you in the ass. While this season wasn't a notable one for Colorado, it seems as if the Nordic snow god Ullr is trying to make up for the slow start.

During the week of May 5, Arapahoe Basin has gotten over 15 inches of fresh powder. Yes, you read that right: A-Basin is getting dumped on like it’s late January going on February. Known for being open later than most resorts, A-Basin is on pace to extend the ski season past their initial closing date of June 2. According to the Marketing and Communications manager of Arapahoe Basin, Saia Isaac, the ski resort is, “…still 100 percent open. We’re not scheduled to close until June 2, and we’ll see how long we can keep this season running.”

During the 12-inch dump at A-Basin this past week, the Eisenhower Tunnel also received 16 inches itself. Ski and snowboard enthusiasts are all the more pleased with the ability to continue to hit the fresh pow at the slopes as long as the skies keep providing.

While some folks in the state are ready for the hot days of summer to come, the fact is, hitting the slopes is what you should still be doing this May. Even if you are hoping to hit the road on the fancy new bike you got in spring, maybe you need to accept the fact skis or snowboards are the only sporting equipment you should be using.
