Saberhagen twice won comeback player of the year under similar circumstances.  So did Chris Carpenter, Rick Sutcliffe and recently Francisco Liriano.  Except Liriano's 2010 CPotY followed his, at the time, career high 136.2 IP 2009.  There's many other 1 time winners on the list who did it just after limited workloads. 

2010 winner Tim Hudson looks like exactly the analogue you're looking for here.  Pretty much a career year at 34 too.
