2014 MTV Movie Awards
You know, after all the hoopla and formality surrounding the Oscars, I thought it’d be an excellent time to tackle a far less uppity awards show: the MTV Movie Awards. Nominations were announced just a few days ago, and honestly, this is one of my favorite awards shows, with good reason. It’s fun!
Interestingly enough, some of the biggest nominees in the biggest categories at this year’s MTV Movie Awards actually mirror some Oscar nominees, but that’s where the similarities end. Personally? I love silly categories like Best Kiss, Best Fight, the “#WTF Moment” award and, of course, the “Scared as S**t Performance” award.
Let’s take a look first at the biggest categories. The Movie of the Year nominees are 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Wolf of Wall Street. For Female Performance, the nominees are Amy Adams (American Hustle), Jennifer Aniston (We’re the Millers), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave). In the Male Performance, the nominees are Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).
See? With a few notable exceptions, this year’s MTV Movie Awards nominees actually mirror the Academy Award nominees. Interesting, but let’s just go ahead and give everything to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, okay? Because honestly, the MTV generation has a lot to be thankful for this year – that movie was outstanding.
Some of the other great nominations in hilariously awesome categories include: Steve Carell, Will Ferrell Paul Rudd and David Koechner (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) for best #WTF moment (if you’ve seen the movie, you know), James Franco, Ashley Benson and Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers) for Best Kiss and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) for Best Scared As S**t Performance (I agree).
So yeah, I’ll totally watch this awards show, and I suspect it’ll be infinitely more entertaining than the Oscars. You can check out the full list of nominees here, by the way.
And congratulations to Mark Wahlberg! He’s going to be honored with the MTV Generation Award during the ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, on Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. (EST).
