Weekend box office preview: ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ vs. ‘Mr. Peabody’
Ah, winter. Will you ever really go away? For those of us who are sick of being cooped up in our houses, sheltering in place from the wickedly cold temperatures, it’s time: We need to get out to the movie theater and catch a flick. This weekend looks like a decent one for fans of action films and animated movies, though I highly doubt we’ll see blockbuster-level numbers when all is said and done.
It’s hard to believe that seven long years have passed since 300 first hit theaters. That film was the very definition of a blockbuster, so it’s entirely possible that in the long run, 300: Rise of an Empire will do extremely well (despite relatively poor reviews from major movie critics). With a new director at the helm (Noam Murro), can this 300 prove as popular with fans as the original?
The other major movie opening this weekend is the animated Mr. Peabody & Sherman, and I must say, I do want to see it. I grew up watching reruns of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, and I loved the segments featuring this brainiac dog and his adorable human son, Sherman. Reviews for Mr. Peabody look pretty solid, and this IS a DreamWorks film, so it’s probably a safe bet that youngsters will enjoy it. I like the idea of a whole new generation being exposed to Mr. Peabody – so I do hope this film does well.
As far as the rest of the pack, I do think last weekend’s number one movie, Liam Neeson’s Non-Stop, will probably finish in the top five, along with The Lego Movie. I’m not sure about Son of God, though I'll admit it has a niche.
Anyone else planning on hitting the movie theater this weekend? Are you itching to see 300: Rise of an Empire or something else?
