Monday Medley: Lego girls are beautiful
Today is the first-ever Multicultural Children’s Book Day. InCultureParent has some great recommendations and ideas to use, but I’d like to personally recommend books by Yuyi Morales, Wood Sprite’s favorite author and illustrator. Her absolute favorites are Los Gatos Black on Halloween and Little Night, our bedtime book.
Princess Free Zone points out that Lego is still banking on looks as their main selling point for their Friends line for girls (which, by the way, Wood Sprite does not like). Would you ever see the word beautiful used on a Lego shirt featuring Legends of Chima, Harry Potter, or any of the Legos that my daughter plays with? Visit the link to see the shirt; this marketing is far from encouraging Lego use.
Seventeen magazine is making teen girls responsible for male behavior. Instead of telling parents about teen boys sexting you, says Seventeen, or even telling the boys to stop, you should send a cute selfie instead to redirect their behavior because they’re such animals they have no control of their sexual impulses. Seriously, Seventeen? This is absolutely outrageous advice and it’s sexist against both boys and girls.
Natural Born Learners has an article up today about eight different ideas in education that are obsolete. I read through them and find myself agreeing with them all, which is pretty rare about… well, most things! The problem is that we see education as a one size fits all experience that occurs at one place during a specific time period when, in fact, it is every moment we breathe and experience life.
