The thing about baseball prospects is that for the masses, they're unknowns.  Casual fans won't know anything about the 'dark past', UNLESS the guys shape up - at which point, the club will make it a point to highlight them as the ultimate feel-good example of kids who have put their lives back together after making some mistakes.
Giving guys "a second chance" is fantastic spin for a "family friendly" team.  And, of course, if they wash out (talent-wise or personality-wise), the club gets to spin its commitment to the moral high ground.
Bradley didn't have a meltdown - and the club was "sensitive" to his issues.  Perfect family friendly spin.  (Pity he hit like Rafael Belliard - oh, well).
