Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for July 28
Minor news note (really minor, from my point of view): Joseph Dunigan recalled from the disabled list and assigned to Jackson. Denny Almonte placed on disabled list.
AAA -- Reno 7, Tacoma 6 -- Box
A back-and-forth affair finally decided when Reno scored in the bottom of the 9th on a fielding error by first baseman Jesus Montero. It was his second fielding error of the game, actually.
Franklin Gutierrez had a double and a single.
Carter Capps threw 2.0 IP of scoreless relief with one strikeout, after Hector Noesi gave up 4 ER in his 5.0 IP of work.
And while we're on the theme of guys who once wore the uniform of the Big Club ... Josh Wilson (he of the head-desk-slam-inducing .294 SLG in 388 Mariner plate appearances in 2010) homered for the Aces.
AA -- Huntsville 5, Jackson 3 -- Box
Roenis Elias (26intheMix) posted another strong outing: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K.
On the year: 3.01 ERA | 1.18 WHIP | 3.3 BB/9 | 8.5 K/9
Our man Ji-Man Choi (Talk40 #19) had a triple and a walk. At AA: .254/.350/.493 with .255 BABIP. He's doing fine.
Low-A -- Cedar Rapids 4, Clinton 3 -- Box
Gordon surmised that the wrist contusion suffered by D.J. Peterson back in Everett may have been contributing to his slump. Now he gets a day off. Let's see if it helps.
Instead, Marcus Littlewood (Talk40 #37) was the hitting star with a double and a triple. It was his 13th two-bagger and first three-bagger of the year.
Two unearned runs off of Jochi Ogando (Watch List) sealed the deal for the Kernels.
Short Season-A -- Everett 6, Hillsboro 0 -- Box
The Hops did Fear the Zokan. Or at least Jacob Zokan went deep into the game: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.
Erudite Stanfordite but NFL-bodied Austin Wilson had two doubles and a walk. He's picking up the pace as the summer goes along. Since July 15: .306/.404/.490.
Rookie -- Pulaski 6, Bristol 2 -- Box
As noted in the Shout Box, this was actually completion of a game from July 1 that Luiz Gohara (Talk40 #21) started before it was suspended.
So Ramire Cleto picked up the ball and went 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K.
And Isaiah Yates (Talk40 #39) took over in center field and homered (his first of the year).
AZL Rookie -- Royals 8, Mariners 1 -- Box
The youthful M's were never really in it as the youthful Royals jumped on the very youthful Brazilian Daniel Missaki and then Ugueth Urbina (the younger) (Watch List). Missaki gave up four earned runs in 1.1 IP, and Urbina the younger gave up two more in 3.2 IP.
Looking Ahead
Happy Taijuan Day. Taijuan Walker (Talk40 #2) again for Tacoma. And, as has been the case lately, Happy Lars Day as well. Fast-emerging Lars Huijer for Everett.
