...I am not criticizing James' larger point. The reason fielding continues to be so misunderstood and incorrectly evaluated by casual fans is that there does not exist the same sort of subconscious language about it that there does for pitching and hitting...and he's right that this language is what drew me to the game in the first place...it was like learning the code words for a secret, exclusive club. No other sport can say that. Basketball has things like triple-doubles and 40 pt games and such, but those just don't carry the same stable meanings that baseball stats do. And forget about Hockey - a sport that used to routinely boast 200 point scorers every year and now rarely sees 100 points from more than a handful of stars. Even more, this is true of football, where it would be nearly impossible to read the bubble gum card for about 2/3 of the roster and know if they were good or bad players (you can do it for QBs, kickers, and RBs, perhaps...maybe top wide receivers...but not for anyone on the lines or anyone playing defense).
