Cycling the Carretera Austral

Tackle this daunting highway in rural Chile

For couples that are cycling enthusiasts, take a trip down to Chile and try to conquer the Carretera Austral.  Running for nearly 800 miles from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Higgins, in some places this route can barely be called a road.  It runs through some of the most remote areas of the country, thus providing cyclers with some truly amazing scenery as they travel though the road itself is only gravel in many areas.  See the beauty of the country and stop off in the little towns along the way.  This is a pretty popular route as well, so you’re likely to meet people from all over the world as you take this challenging journey.  Has anyone tried to cycle the Carretera Austral before?  How many miles did you make?
