Creative Paths to Victory, Pt. 3
Building on Pt. 2's insanity...

Ok, so this one's probably even more insane than my boneheaded Manny Machado idea.  But I'm gonna lay it out there anyway: if they M's acquired Clint Frazier, they could *probably* land Chris Archer.

As noted in that Fangraphs article, Clint Frazier's got something like $40mil of projected surplus value.  Archer, by my hasty-back-of-the-napkin math, was worth $35mil last year and there's not a lot of reason to believe (barring injury) that he'll be worth less than that going forward.  His contract costs about $34mil for the next four years, so we're talking about ~$100mil in surplus value for him over that period.

How do you get to $100mil from the M's side?  Well, Frazier would likely be the biggest piece at ~$40mil by himself.  But guys like Ben Gamel have a bunch of surplus value, as well.  He just turned in a ~league average season, which means his own contributions are worth $10-15mil/year, depending on if he continues to produce at his 2017 level or if he improves to sold 2 win player territory.  But, again, my back-of-the-napkin math would put him worth something like $25mil over the next two years, and (again, assuming you buy him as a 1.5-2.0 win player) maybe half that during his arb years.  So he's $35-40mil, too (*IF* the Rays think he projects to be at or near ML-average value).

That's the bulk of Chris Archer's surplus value, in two players who are both at the beginning of their careers (essential for any rebuilding team).  Obviously you could get even more aggressive, swapping Gamel for Haniger and you're probably pretty much there in terms of surplus value (I'd be surprised if most FO's don't consider Haniger a 3 win player--and if they don't, we'll happily keep him and reap those rewards).

The more likely scenario is one where the M's largely stand pat, but if they wanted to make REAL noise, they could do it with a pair of moves (acquiring Ellsbury + Frazier, then flipping Frazier++ for Archer) that wouldn't detract anything significant from the club's current talent level (Ellsbury would stand in really well for Gamel or Haniger, though the former more so than the latter obviously) while Archer would give them a legit Ace to go with Paxton--and that would make the M's a force to be reckoned with for years to come.  There would be more moving parts to the trade(s) than the named players above, obviously, but it seems like they could form the principles for a reasonable deal.  Probably the Rays don't like our players that much, but if they did then there's the potential for a blockbuster trade there.

Or maybe I'm crazy.  Probably just that ;-)

The easiest thing to do if they want to contend is to just go out and get Darvish, but it seems like that's not in the cards for whatever reason.  If they're not going to make another serious addition this offseason (Gordon's going to be a big help, but he CAN'T be the headline acquisition for a club that wants to win in 2018) then they really do need to take a good, hard look at tearing it down and auctioning off players like Cruz, Paxton, and even Seager.  If you don't push all-in THIS SEASON, the next would-be contending M's ballclub is probably going to materialize after Paxton's already pitching in Fenway or NY, after Robbie's no longer a major contributor, and after Felix has been deposed.

SirJonez, thanks so much for stepping up while Doc is out.

Has anyone heard anything about Doc? Is he okay? If you're reading this, Doc, we all hope and pray you are well.

2

I love this community.  I really mean that.  I doubt I ever see any of you face-to-face, but the impact this group's had on my life over the years is difficult to quantify.

And yeah, prayers and best wishes go out to Doc.  I haven't heard anything, but I'm halfway 'round the world so I wouldn't be a good source in any case.

The Mariners waived Anthony Misiewicz and he landed on the Rays' roster.

Now we get to waste the useless IFA money we acquired to get him back. Because reasons.

I loathe this team.

They added Juan Nicasio, who does have a live arm but has only ever had one good year - last year, where he pitched in the most games of any player in MLB. Odds of him coming up with an injury this year have to be in the 90+ percentile, right? I mean it's the Mariners, who only add injured pitchers.

Then like you said, they "re-acquired" Misiewicz for a million dollars of what is essentially monopoly money where Seattle is concerned. They've dropped 20+ million in the international market since acquiring Felix with basically nothing to show for it. So at least this adds what, a future LOOGY back to the team? He wasn't great against lefties last year but was pretty terrific the year before - but then that's how it usually goes in the minors.  Lower levels can't hit lefties or breaking balls, but once you hit AA they've got that capability.  Anthony has been starting but has also been bad at it, so at some point you'd expect a pen move.  Maybe he can be a future long reliever.

Then they added Shawn Armstrong, who has a strong arm, not-great results, and is out of options.  So it's entirely possible the Ms set that Monopoly money on fire and will cut or trade Armstrong before camp is out.

Dipoto loooooves his spaghetti, but it rarely looks appetizing. After teasing us with the kobe steak it looks even less so. This is why I keep liquor in the house.

RP, RP, RP.   We”ve just added three of them.  Spaghetti, indeed.

Unless you look at Nicasio as some sort of a swing guy (he used to be a starter), which I suspect the M’s do not, considering he’s been tons better out of the bullpen than as a starter (.815 OPS allowed vs. .683).

Hmmmmmmmmm...........

Right now, if we sit pat, we’ve upgraded offensively at 1B and CF, but we’ve lost something defensively.  Our pitching staff basically hasn’t improved through acquisition, but may have improved through having Leake and Ramirez for a full year, along with some MLB experience for Moore and Povse.

and I still think we upgrade on Motter with a multi-positional guy with an actual bat.  If we are keeping 13 arms, as has been suggested, having two very flexible guys on the bench is a must.

All the same, a Lance Lynn would look good in teal and blue.

Normally we say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

In this case, multiple birds in the hand were considered worth the cap money in hopes of landing one in the bush, and the one in the bush got away. There was tremendous upside if we had got him, but now we're faced with the downside of having failed.

It is sad to see how little we will get back for the surplus cap money.

Did you guys see the news that leaked info from Ohtani's physical showed some UCL damage? Apparently the question is whether this is just normal wear and tear or something to be concerned about.

10

But it sounds like we may not have reason to feel so bad about missing out.  If the difference in this season would be next to nothing.  Well, it still sucks but would be easier to swallow.
