He's a bit interesting. If he has the glove for 3B he has some upside. Last year still as a 20-Yr old in Clinton he walked more than 100 pts and had 25 XB hits in 80 games. Alas he K'ed 84 times in 268 ABs too.
The 4 homers this year are pretty cool. He hits RHP way better than lefties so far: Weird....
But if he can handle 3B as well as 1B and keeps developing the pop he has some promise at least as a guy who could make a MLB roster. A great eye some pop and a utility type glove......guys have stayed in the bigs with that skill set for a long time. The key of course is having enough pop to make MLB P-types a bit reluctanty to pound the zone.
Here's one tepid scouting report from a while back: http://longenhagen.blogspot.com/2012/06/mlb-draft-prospect-scouting-repo...
Spec says this: http://marinerstalk.com/article/marinerstalk40-22-joe-decarlo-3b
Future Mariners is up and running. Bat571 is doing daily Farm reports (a la Les Nessman?), Spec is starting a 2015 Spec 66, and Tacoma Rain will be doing player highlights, starting with the guys JackZ brought in to reinforce the 8-9-10 starters spots. So, take a run over to http://futurems.detect-o-vision.com and let us know what you want.
A quick excerpt from yesterday's Daily Digest to (hopefully) whet your appetite:
Joe DeCarlo Doubles His Season Total Bases in One Game
Remember the 2012 Draft? Mike Zunino got picked 1st, with the 3rd overall pick. Edwin Diaz and Tyler Pikewere grabbed in the 3rd round, Pike with a comp pick due to not signing Kevin Cron the previous year. Patrick Kivlehan was tabbed in the 4th round, and Chris Taylor in the 5th. Pretty decent draft, right? But wait, there’s more, as they say on TV.
In the 2nd round, the Ms picked a Pennsylvania HS’er named Joe DeCarlo. DeCarlo spent 2012 and 2013 in Rookie ball, then played 80 games for Clinton last year, along with brief stops in the AZL and at Everett. So far, he hasn’t really done much to get headlines, and is back in Clinton to start this year.
Well, now he has a headline. With 3 hits in 4 ABs today v. Kane County, DeCarlo raised his average from .143 to .240. By also drawing 2 walks (it was a 13-inning game) he raised his OBP from .250 to .367. And since 2 of his 3 hits were homers, which doubled his season’s total bases from 9 to 18, his slugging went from .428 to .720. So his OPS went from a below average, but livable .678 to a notable 1.087. Now that’s progress.
I prefer when prospects show steady improvement to get up to those >1.000 OPSes, but given how things are going so far this year, this is QUITE nice.
