@shannondrayer: Cano had surgery today to repair a right and left lide core muscle injury. Recovery expected to be 6 weeks. Should be full go in spring.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/13/15 4:39pm
Good news there. Probably was troubling him all year. Hopefully gives him psychological lift as well

I see it is active...but in the "all" subdomain...could someone who can do so please move it? Sorry...I couldn't see any mechanism for me to tell it to post only here.

Doc - created a post to describe my work on the Elo project in clearer terms and it's in the hopper - can you or the admins place it into the #Baseball subdomain and activate it if you approve? Thanks!

Watching the playoffs it's clear that a number of teams have figured out how to draft, trade for and develop young athletic and quickly successful players. Several of them on some of these teams. Guys who have the tools and just blossom. With the M's it feels like trying to pound the proverbial square peg through a round hole. That's got to change if we're going to compete with these young, outstanding teams. There a new generation of young players with big time athleticism and big time #Baseball talent that will simply shove aside any team of lesser prowess, no matter how proficient at traditional #Baseball. These guys are amazing. We had the high draft choices and we had Cliff Lee, and we couldn't come up with a single one. Kyle Seager, for all his positive traits, is traditionally good, but he's not one of these young Turks.

I'm a little bit leery of assuming that people coming to #Seattle will always flame out...it may just be that they flame out because they aren't properly led.

I'm a little bit leery about JeDi trading for an athletic outfielder like #Austin #Jackson, because so many guys tank when they come to the Mariners. I wish that there was a way to predict who was going to tank, or at least know what it was about the Mariners that sapped the life and energy out of so many players.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/13/15 4:41pm
It seemed a rift must have been felt strongly between upper and middle management. New faces should help, but only if they do not blow the whole thing up

We asked for JeDi, got JeDi, and are seeing a predictable JeDi move, so there isn't too much room to complain. Still, I can't get used to a new Manager when we finally got a good old one. Vot next? I think JeDi will trade for some young pitchers and relievers and hold onto the guys we have.

Lloyd McClendon was one of my all time favorite Mariners. His thoughts on #Baseball, and players, from horse(manure) to pretty darn good, were much more entertaining than the games themselves. He was the epitome of #Baseball shtick. I wish he would blog here.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/13/15 4:43pm
Well.., he just might.. dunno if I see too many going for him. May end up analyzing someplace..and I could live with that.

#Miami still has IF issues, so the Elias+ could be DJ if it's then Ozuna+ coming back, or maybe Romero might interest them also, which would clear another 40-man spot. If they'd give up Ozuna and Chris Reed (LH reliever who was with the Dodger org) for Elias, DJ, Romero, and a young pitcher (Peterson?, Cochran-Gill?), I think I'd do it.

BTW, Rick, I had suggested Elias+ for Ozuna last year too. ;-) ! Now that Ozuna has shown his abilities in CF and then gotten into Loria's doghouse it may come about this time. I also wanted Rob Brantly and Mark Canha in that trade - Canha turned out quite nicely for a late bloomer - too bad it was for #Oakland! Brantly ended up as the #3 catcher for the White Sox. Having him around as a LH-hitting catcher might have helped ease the strain on Zunino. We'll never know. This year, though, I'd like to see a switch-hitting (Conger, Pena, or #Leon) and/or a LH-hitting catcher (Avila, Brantly, Pierzynski) that could either back up Zunino, share with him, or catch a majority of the games as needed. #Leon or Brantly probably are more #3s to push #Sucre aside, but somebody is needed. Wilson Ramos would be my choice of all the RH-hitting catchers that might be available by trade - he's a year younger than Felix and from the same city. Maybe he just needs the Cascades and Olympics for scenery.

Based on what I've read, Bud Black looks like a strong possibility in #Washington, and Joey Cora is getting favorable press in #San_Diego, so the field might narrow quickly. DeMarlo Hale is another guy that has coached with Bogar and was interviewed when McClendon was hired if my memory serves. He's at #Toronto this year and is probably getting tired of being a minority interviewee for every manager job, but I wouldn't be upset if he ended up as Bench Coach either, although Rauuul and Dan have to be sentimental favorites, and Dipoto has praised Rauuuul in the past.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/13/15 4:46pm
Cora and Edgar both back in Seattle.. how interesting coukd that be. Randy Johnson wanna try and coach up these pitchers.

For the pitching side, Juan Nieves was replaced by Carl Willis as Red Sox pitching coach mid-season, as their scapegoat, but he's well respected and also has coached with Bogar. Whether they'd take him as pitching coach or BP coach would be the question. Bob McClure is probably out of job in Philly, and might be a good choice for the pitching coach, having developed Greinke and Hamels among others. QC coach needs a smart young guy who's played and knows the nuances of the rules, is comfortable with the #Technology, and can assist the bench coach. I'd like to see the M's try Jack Marder. Having been both a catcher and infielder, he's familiar with the plays for the replay stuff, and his intelligence and leadership qualities were always praised. After retiring due to the concussions, he's apparently back at #Oregon finishing his degree and an assistant coach. He might be a good guy to try.

I don't think even Rauuul himself thinks he's ready to manage, nor is Dan the Man. But Bogar has punched all the tickets and seems ready in all respects. They have to wait for the contract end on Oct. 31 or have Arte Moreno's OK - I suspect Dipoto would rather not ask. I suspect they'll interview several of the guys being mentioned (Bud Black, Dan, Raul, the Coras, DiSarcina) but that Bogar will be the choice. Bogar did serve with Arnie Beyeler in #Boston in 2012 (under Valentine), so my guess at coaches would be: Edgar and Chris continuing, Beyeler in VanSlyke's spot, either Rauuul or Dan as Bench coach or AA/AAA manager, DiSarcina as 3rd base coach (if he's available) or Mike Gallego.

That takeout play at 2b goes back to the days of Cobb but it's past time for it to join the chin #Music and the home plate blocking/collision in the dustbin of #Baseball #History. Dumb that it's allowed.

I wonder how well those Met flamethrowers can aim their 100 mph fastballs at a kneecap.

OK, I officially hate the Dodgers, video review, and Chase Utley is #Baseball's dirtiest player.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/13/15 4:48pm
It was real bad esp now. That was Pete Rose esq.. sure Roses was in an all-star game.. but atleast it was at home plate

Bat ... Rauuuuul was mentioned for HEAD coach by Drayer, I think it was, so if you can get his Lei around your neck (Leadership, energy, inspiration) as the bench coach, I guess it's a done deal ... what would be left other than to get Dan the Man in to wave Edgar's runners around first...

Elias and ? for Ozuna and ? is quite an idea there Bat. Officer thinking ;- ) with MLB Trade Rumors foreseeing a Miami swapout unto the popular Cuban Yoenis Cespedes. And the most-comparable b-ref.com player: KOLE CALHOUN heh, heh, heh, heh, HEH

Bat loves the hot stove. Hey Bat, post mortem: you threw out a lot of ideas for the M's last off-season - trade ideas. Which of these would you say, to both teams: You should have listened to me! Any trade proposals you remember that, looking back, both us and them would have come out ahead compared to what they ended up doing?

Heck. I'd like to throw that question to everyone here.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/10/15 2:36pm
Really is intriguing what they may do. Hope nothing drastuc. Get a couple avg guys and try and make sure address pen.. maybe make a lil splash in FA

Mike Gallego was cut loose by the A's in favor of Ron #Washington recently, but he's been considered one of the better 3rd base coaches in the past. Wonder if he might work out with Woodward as joint IF and base coaches or if they need somebody who can handle catchers or something.

My proposal for a to-do list: Re-sign Iwakuma and Gutierrez, sign Mark Lowe and David Aardsma for the bullpen, and then sign Doug Fister for rotation depth. Then get a catcher that won't demand #1 status, but is capable if Zunino needs more time off. If the Astros wouldn't trade Hank Conger, I'd make a run at Avila if there is no QO, or perhaps Brayan Pena. I'd also trade for Sandy #Leon from the Red Sox, an excellent defensive catcher who hit in the minors, and let Edgar and Dan work with him as an alternative to #Sucre as #3. Finally, I'd offer Elias+ to #Miami for Marcell Ozuna as another Edgar project to fill the CF hole. Any attitude issues he developed in #Miami wouldn't last long with Cruz and Cano around!

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/10/15 2:39pm
I like it all, but do not know if all that for Elias coukd go down. I'd like to see him continue to grow also

Another member of the M's pitching Kiddie Korps -- Enyel De Los Santos (19.3 years old) -- picked by #Baseball America as one of the top 20 prospects in the NW League. The low minors looking very nice!

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/10/15 2:40pm
They are getting close.. just need to have better luck with prospects working out for them

It appears the Ms might have given guys the choice to accept another position based on the new management's discretion or to make a clean break and look elsewhere. Van Slyke may have chosen the latter, rather than wait for a new manager or player development director to decide whether he would be of use. Meanwhile, the Red Sox let Arnie Beyeler, their OF coach and one of the most respected in the game, seek other opportunities, apparently after friction with Hanley Ramirez. Wonder if Dipoto or Bogar has any links to him. I'd hope RAUUUL gets a long look for bench coach as well. He has links to both Dipoto and Bogar and might be ready to get back into things. And I wonder if Jamie Moyer would be interested in the BP coach gig.

Not keeping Van Slyke is...odd. Glad to see Edgar sticking around though.

I was happy they kept Edgar (Of Course) and Woodward, but a little surprised they didn't keep Van Slyke around... he seemed to do wonders for Ackley's OF conversion, so he probably could have helped Miller... Of course Mariners could have offered for him to stay and he could have wanted to go.

Though I liked McClendon personally it's probably a good thing to get a fresh, clean slate with a new GM regime. Let the GM freely pick his own guy. It's for the best. I'm also glad Rich Donnelly has been let go (personally I wish him the best.). The Mariners have not had a good third base coach for a decade. Let's get someone who knows the difference between aggressive and foolish baserunning.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/13/15 7:22pm
What did everyone like about Lloyd anyway.. I missed it entirely, but must say many seemed on board

It will be Bogar: Bet you dollars to donuts. Never below .525 in the minors and was 14-8 with #Texas in a stint last season. He's a DiPoto guy.

Reply - Browns8625 - 10/13/15 7:23pm
Makes sense, but is that best available out there. I'm big believer in overall relationship and history though

Not surprised, as I posted on the other page. Lloyd is no great manager but, alas, I've kind of grown use to him. I think you can bet on some bat-type guys not returning next year. I still think 2 of the Trumbo/Smith/Morrison trifecta will not return. Glad Edgar and Woodward are staying aboard. As a former MLB IF'er, Woodward will be able to bring some experience and continuity to our SS question. BTW, our young player on a fast track will be Pizzano. He's exactly of the "control the strike zone" template that DiPoto has spoken of. Off all our MLB guys above Clinton, only Taylor brings that same MLB template, with some hit skills. Taylor has a MLB K/BB ratio of 17/70 however. I thought he was swinging from his heels this year, btw.

Reply - moethedog - 10/9/15 1:25pm
That should have been MiLB guys above Clinton AND Taylor brings the same MiLB skill set.
