In 10 games with the Yankees, Ackley is now .333-.350-.556 (1 HR). Why am I not too surprised? And good for him.

My theory is that the beard was so ridiculous that it was throwing off his rotational mechanics and maybe even obscuring his vision. Has to be the beard.

Reply - anonymous - 9/18/15 8:09am
The right field fence in Yankee Stadium doesn't hurt him either. But definitely the beard did

Reply - mojician - 9/18/15 10:46am
The rotational mechanics are a good point, as it is hard to generate bat speed with a beard collecting that much wind resistance. But, I think that the giant ringworm growing under Ackley's beard took its toll as well. Ackley had to quit chewing tobacco because the ringworm and chaw bored through his cheek on opposite sides and threatened to create a hole. The withdrawals put him off his game.

Reply - Browns8625 - 9/18/15 3:11pm
Sbrmatt can you run the numbers...?Grumpy may be on to something with the beard

I for one must say how excited, and surprised, I am that mariners are 5 out. Paxton back on hill vs Rangers.... Bout to find out just how real this team is. All the sudden everything that was so weak for so long is picking up..far fewer errors, far fewer terrible batting performances..bullpen not blowing everything. Hopefully not too little too late, but it is going to take a high win pct.

Reply - mojician - 9/18/15 10:48am
It would mean quite a bit to finish higher than the Angels this year and to finish higher than fourth place.

Feels like a sad day in klat kingdom. Alot of good analysis from ball fans generally

The realization for me, has been that I'm not looking for a general "#Seattle sports community." 99% of the time I come here for Doc's perspective, whether that's his posts or the discussion threads that result. And SSI mostly seems to be other content now. So I'll check back once in a while and see if Doc has posted, as opposed to checking in daily. No harm no foul.

Sounds fair daddyo, but so does accepting whatever, may have to scroll a bit farther

Reply - DaddyO - 9/17/15 5:26pm
Sure. By the way, you entered this community by engaging it's preexisting interests.

Reply - Browns8625 - 9/18/15 3:13pm
Agreed.. by definition.. it should be Seattle sports talk I figure. If that is what you mean

I say all this only to give voice to what some of us seem to be feeling. Who am I to say what should happen? I just don't understand why, if newcomers aren't interested in the community as it exists, don't they just start their own separate site and build their own community?

I want to be clear that for me it is not a matter of being unwelcoming to newcomers who may bring new interests to the community. It is the sudden influx of several new members of the community who, bless their heart, seem to show no regard for the prior shared interests of the community and only want to use the community as an audience for their interests. It's as if a club that met in a clubhouse and was rolling along fine with a mutually satisfying atmosphere and mutually satisfying activities and interests when suddenly some new people show up and start redecorating the place and crowding out what had been going on before. I don't mind some new blood and a fresh perspective, even new interests. But a healthy respect for what has existed for years, along with a desire to fit in, would go a long way towards smoothing any transition.

Reply - Browns8625 - 9/17/15 2:46pm
Yes, I see now.. the large sudden influx the one day was pretty good

Reply - DaddyO - 9/17/15 5:32pm
FYI, I did not have your entrance into this community in mind. Yes, you posted a lot right away. That's not a big deal, it just required some practical adjustments. But at least you joined the community and participated in it's existing interests. My concern is with the phenomenon of a sudden influx of articles on subjects on which this community has shown no prior interests written by people who have not at all engaged the community as it exists. I may be way off base here, but I sense I am not the only person who is troubled by this. A want to repeat that this is not my community, I did not build it. I do not fund it. So it's just one point of view.

It IS proving necessary to take steps to avoid the clutter of content that heretofore has not been among this community's interests. I just figured out that I can create a separate Bookmark for whatever tabbed categories I want to follow. The preponderance of content different from what has traditionally been on this site, while I'm sure interesting to those posting it and whoever might newly be attracted to it, made this necessary. Separate Bookmarks works find at this point; for me it just means abandoning the regular use of a single point of access. I'm not sure how this will affect articles on subjects that do not currently have a tab (Konspiracy Korner, or social/political/scientific commentary).

SSI denizens, I hope we can still communicate even if some of you decide to flee the site for a while. Doc...given any thought to what you might do with your second site?

Reply - jemanji - 9/18/15 3:43pm
Will get back to you Matt. Thanks for axing. And have you amigos seen Chris Cluff's second site? He's got quite a background in Seahawks writing. :- )
