Now it appears from MLBTR Iwakuma's LA deal is simply being reworked.

Wonder now if DiPoto half-figured this would happen and kept some payroll back for this contingency, that if it didn't happen he could use the payroll once it became clear that it wouldn't. This could also explain what seems an inexplicable lack of payroll flexibility on the part of the Mariners, and it could explain the lack of further investment in both rotation and bullpen (since someone at this point slotted as a starter might have to serve in the pen to start the season).

If so (and of course it's speculative), this would be evidence of a true JeDi.

No need for that, OBF...bring in Kuma on an incentive laden deal, give him the soft glove treatment, use the fifth starter as a bonus swingman - Paxton, for example, isn't likely to pitch a full season's worth of innings. Kuma and Paxton can sort of share that spot.

Also a major BUMMER for the Mariners as they won't be getting the draft pick now... Only way to salvage this for Kuma AND the M's is for him to sign with the mariners probably on a cheap deal... otherwise no one will sign him until after the ASB because of the draft compensation. Hopefully Dipoto didn't burn any bridges.

Sad and Ironic that this is the same way the M's got Kuma in the first place. #Oakland won the bidding, but low balled due to injury concerns on a physical IIRC (well they were just cheap they blamed it on #Health concerns).

Either which way, I would be happy to have Kuma back in the fold... Now the sixth man out can either start in tacoma as depth or be a killer in the bullpen. Walker for closer???

Wow...massive BUMMER for Iwakuma if that turns out to verify. But...would the Mariners then jump back in and offer him an incentive laden deal? I know we said we were done spending, but would Japanese ownership make an exception and up payroll to get him?

If Iwakuma's #Health is causing a delay...that really does change my impression quite a bit...not sure if there's a #Health issue or a contractual one.

Has Iwahuma deal gone through yet? Haven't seen an official announcement. Merks

Reply - okdan - 12/16/15 11:50pm

Interesting... Good call, Merks. Shoulder looks worse than expected? What if DiPoto moved into plan B too soon?

Reply - jemanji - 12/17/15 12:48am

Or ... shoulder looks worse than expected = 2 years max = maybe the correct call?

Reply - DaddyO - 12/17/15 7:00am

If Kuma is not in normal health, our evaluations of JeRy are definitely shifted more in his favor. Not yet full JeDi, but perhaps JeRi, one letter away.

And we have to take into account that, unless further moves are forthcoming, ownership appears AGAIN to have shrunk back from approving the relatively small increase in payroll that might have significantly strengthened this team's potential.

Every team is dealing with 40-man issues right now... and Olson is kind of an interesting, but meh Lefty reliever... so odds of him getting through waivers is probably pretty good right? Do we still have David Rollins kicking around?

Hultzen cleared waivers, Doc. He was outrighted to AAA. He cleared because he's still hurt and no one wanted to gamble a roster spot yet.

I think he wanted more MLB-near-ready SPs available and didn't want to give up any of his other recent waiver grab offensive depth pieces.

Don't scare me though. The M's immediately nabbed Hultzen back, right? THAT one was more of a sly shuffle cups maneuver? Had been meaning to write up The Big Move of Hultzen to the pen...

You, the seasoned SSI/DOV/Mariners denizen, get here and immediately hit the #Baseball tab/subdomain. This takes you to a site that is equivalent to the old SSI/DOV, but with the Shout Box to which you are so addicted.
If you want to easily check Dr. D Seahawk convo's, though, just hit the ALL tab/subdomain and then hit the ACTIVE THREADS tab. That will allow a quick check of DOV #Football chat and, if not rewarded, the denizen simply hits the #Baseball tab again.
Drive home safely.

THAT line sure got a laugh from me, KingBC.

I remember a brief conversation here a couple weeks ago after Dipoto made a comment about our pitchers being "decidedly" left handed or something to that effect. With Olson's release today he has now cut 5 LH pitchers off the 40 man. Reifenhauser was traded but the others just released/outrighted. Olmos, Rassmussen, Hultzen and Olson.

With #Napoli gone and #San_Diego stocking up on catchers espn is tying us to Derick Norris as a possible RH compliment to Lind because he can also be of value behind the plate as well as being able to "play" 1B. No idea if he's better or worse than Montero in the field but you wonder if Jerry can really make it the next 2 months without upgrading something.

SABR Matt's picture

Mike #Napoli signs with #Cleveland...so we're definitely going with Jesus Montero as the RH part of the 1B platoon (and as an occasional DH when Aoki sits to get an extra power bat in certain situations and Cruz plays left).

Mariners drop Tyler Olson and claim another old Dipoto farmhand, Schugal. Schugal looks like rubber spaghetti to me (looks like spaghetti, as likely to "stick" as rubber)...but Dipoto sure does love to go get guys he once had.

It would appear the KBO is a bit more than AA, while NPB is AAAA. Guys who are stars in each tend to do well in the US, but not the main run of player. The KBO guys who do well in the NPB are the guys that are worth targeting right now.

At the same time, there are a couple dozen former MLB pitchers with ERAs greater than 6 who have gone on to be KBO Cy Young candidates. Let's not overblow the quality of the KBO quite yet.

It's hard to digest the soft market on Korean players, given their splashes so recently. Would be like Ichiro and Godzilla proving themselves and then ... well, I guess that's it out of #Japan. Odd.

From MLB-TR: The Orioles appear to have serious interest in Korean outfielder Hyun-Soo Kim, according to report from Dan Connolly of the #Baltimore Sun (Twitter links). #Baltimore has already extended Kim a two-year offer that would likely guarantee him $3MM to $4MM per season and is continuing to negotiate with his representatives.

Uh.....It is a mistake if we let him go elsewhere for that slight amount. Grab him Dipoto! 3x$5M
