And Passan's article was more of a hack job on Girardi than it was on Chapman. What did he expect Girardi to say? Our discussion was light years ahead of Passan, in substance especially.

If you've not done it guys, LL has an interesting article about Marte's swing change, from early in '15 to late in '15. The insinuation is that his DP partner, Cano, impacted his swing, adding more stride, speed and power. It is worth reading.

It's become immensely popular to turn sports into political theater like everything else in our lives these days. Passan's article is, essentially, a call for a lynching. Color me unsurprised.

... and could somebody point out anything new? If not, what IS the article but an expression of Passan's disappointment that Chapman hasn't been blackballed?

Granted he had about a third more playing time, but his DWar went up over 3 times! is it really possible for a guy to win 5 whole games from CF? Having said that, I would take a 95 OPS+, 5 wins in the OF season from Martin and laugh all the way to the bank :) He would also be laughing to the back as he got a big raise ;)

#Tampa would reject that deal because they can't afford Cruz, more than because they think Kiermaier is actually a better #Baseball player. :) But yes. According to B-ref...Kevin Kiermaier is about 2 wins better than Cruz at his very best...ummm...I think not.

Welcome to soft WAR! Lets hope Leonys Martin is the king of that this next year :) I guess that makes Kiermaier better than Cruz... I wonder what we would have to throw into the deal to get them to trade Kevin fro Nelson? Funny thing is... #Tampa Bay really WOULD reject a Kiermaier for Cruz swap...

fun fact - #Baseball Reference thinks Kevin Kiermaier of the Rays was worth 7.3 wins last year, 5.0 wins for his fielding alone. WHAAAA???

Yes sabr..many new pieces and not much reason to project higher. Just glad the expectations are low given how high they were last season, and how that worked out

Sounds about right to me, to be honest...I projected 82.5 wins. Too many questionmarks to be more bullish than that.

Yes...our farm system has gone sour again...I still think a big chunk of the problem is player development (guys like Deej who used to be disciplined suddenly are not, etc), so I'm hopeful that Dipoto can restore value to some of our in-house player options...but he will also need to draft well.

Reply - hawksinsider - 2/13/16 1:53pm

Can always do what the braves did if this yr don't go well. Give up your Canoe and Hernandezs to get farm system back to par

If Jack was such a young talent guru, if he was good at that as advertised and just unlucky, why after seven years of his regime is the Mariners' farm system ranked near the bottom of MLB by most national evaluators? I know this is a moot point given Zduriencik's departure, but the very LEAST one expected from him was a well-stocked farm system when he left. I had been operating on the assumption that Jack's problem was at the MLB level, not the minor league level. But seven years of work and he left the cupboard bare. Things are not going to be so easy for DiPoto.

Reply - SABR Matt - 2/12/16 11:41am

It struck me, while watching this game, that it played a lot like a 2014/2015 Mariner game with Felix pitching until that lucky break for Sojo...we were the team making all the mistakes, they were the team playing crisp, albeit nearly-hitless baseball. We blew so many chances to score. Though...to be fair...this sort of line-up you have to expect will eventually score some runs, so the game had a more inevitable feel to it once we had a 1-0 lead.

hawksinsider...you are actually not correct about crime

1) Crossing the border illegally is a criminal act that shows a lack of respect for our laws and our sovereignty...it's not the biggest infraction in the world, but, as noted many times, the people it hurts the most are the ones who came here legally.

2) Studies have shown that illegal immigrants make up absurdly high percentages of the inmate population and explain statistically impossible (impossible for it to be random) large percentages of violent crimes in the border states.

3) It's not so much that they take jobs (though some people get all worked up about that)...it's that we don't know who they are or what they are trying to accomplish here at all - with the primary security threat facing the nation being remote terrorism, we need to know who is crossing our border as just about every other developed country does so that we have a fighting chance to stop and turn back terrorists before they attack us.

The bigger crime is Not so much the illegals. Maybe they take some jobs, criminal activity can not be any worse than our own citizens... but bigger crime is our own American elites ship jobs over seas.

The pathway we're talking about would be a process by which you would pay back taxes, pay a fine, register with INS, prove you'd never committed a crime other than coming here illegally, and earn, over a period of multiple years, legal status. That form refers to legal immigrants who came here on a green card.
